Statues
of Brahmins removed from Chennai church
Chennai: Two statues
of ''Brahmins,'' installed as part of a society listening to the preachings of
St Thomas at the historic St Thomas Church in Chennai, were removed following a
directive from the police.
The statues, wearing
sacred thread, were part of a group of statues, representing people from various
sections of society, installed in front of the Church at St Thomas Mount on the
city outskirts.
Following complaints
from the public that the ''Brahmin statues'' affected the sentiments of a
particular community and they be removed, police visited the church today.
When police were
convinced that the statues would hurt the feelings of the community the church
authorities themselves removed them, police sources said.
When contacted, the
church authorities said the statues were installed about ten years ago to show
that all sections of people were attracted to the preachings of St Thomas, one
of the Apostles of Jesus Christ who arrived here a little after 52 AD. It was
never intended to offend or hurt anybody's sentiments, they added.
