'Lord Krishna existed. School texts are wrong'

Did Krishna exist?

Most certainly, says Dr Manish Pandit, a nuclear medicine physician who teaches in the United Kingdom, proffering astronomical, archaeological, linguistic and oral evidences to make his case.

"I used to think of Krishna is a part of Hindu myth and mythology. Imagine my surprise when I came across Dr Narhari Achar (a professor of physics at the University of Memphis, Tennessee, in the US ) and his research in 2004 and 2005. He had done the dating of the Mahabharata war using astronomy. I immediately tried to corroborate all his research using the regular Planetarium software and I came to the same conclusions [as him]," Pandit says.

Which meant, he says, that what is taught in schools about Indian history is not correct?

The Great War between the Pandavas and the Kauravas took place in 3067 BC, the Pune-born Pandit, who did his MBBS from BJ Medical College there, says in his first documentary, Krishna : History or Myth?.

Pandit's calculations say Krishna was born in 3112 BC, so must have been 54-55 years old at the time of the battle of Kurukshetra.

Pandit, as the sutradhar of the documentary Krishna: History or Myth?, uses four pillars -- archaeology, linguistics, what he calls the living tradition of India and astronomy to arrive at the circumstantial verdict that Krishna was indeed a living being, because Mahabharata and the battle of Kurukshetra indeed happened, and since Krishna was the pivot of the Armageddon, it is all true.

We are always taught that Krishna is a part of Hindu myth and mythology. And this is exactly what I thought as well. But imagine my surprise when I came across Dr Narhari Achar (of the Department of Physics at the University of Memphis, Tennessee, in the US) and his research somewhere in 2004 and 2005. He had done the dating of the Mahabharata war using astronomy.

I immediately tried to corroborate all his research using the regular Planetarium software and I came to the same conclusions. This meant that what we are taught in schools about Indian history is not correct. I also started wondering about why this should be so. I think that a mixture of the post-colonial need to conform to western ideas of Indian civilisation and an inability to stand up firmly to bizarre western ideas are to blame. Also, any attempt at a more impartial look at Indian history is given a saffron hue.

I decided that I could take this nonsense no more, and decided to make films to show educated Indians what their true heritage was. The pen is mightier than the sword is an old phrase but I thought of new one: Film is the new pen. I wanted to present a true idea of Indian history unfettered by perception, which was truly scientific, not just somebody's hypothesis coloured by their perceptions and prejudices.

A documentary on Rama is forthcoming in the future. But the immediate reason I deferred that project is the immense cost it would entail. Whereas research on Krishna and Mahabharata was present and ready to go. Further more, Rama according to Indian thought, existed in the long hoary ancient past of Treta Yuga, where science finds it difficult to go.

There are more than 140 astronomy references in the Mahabharata. Dr Achar used simulations of the night sky to arrive at November 22, 3067 BC, as the day the Mahabharata war began. He used the references common to Udyoga and Bhisma Parvan initially, and so Saturn at Rohini, Mars at Jyestha with initially only the two eclipses, Lunar at Kartika and Solar at Jyestha.

So now, we know about Balarama's pilgrimage tithis and nakshatras, and believe it or not, all that fits the 3067 BC date perfectly. And to top it all, so does the repetition of the three eclipses described at the destruction of Dwarka 36 years later.

This would explain why so many other researchers tried and failed to find the date of the Mahabharata war as it is based on such a unique set of astronomy that it occurred only once in the last 10,000 years. Not just that, but the fact that archaeology, oral and living traditions point to the same. And yes, we cannot separate the Mahabharata war from Krishna . If one is shown to have happened, then the other must be true as well.

The Hindu religious empire extended across the whole of the Asian sub-continent to South East Asia, from Afghanistan to Thailand (where Ramayana and Krishna are still shown through dances), Burma, Cambodia (Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, etc), Vietnam, Laos (little Kurukshetra and temples), Malaysia (which was Hindu until recent) up to Java (more temples), Bali (where Hinduism is still the religion) and Indonesia, where Bhima's grandson is said to have performed a thousand fire rituals at Yogyakarta. Afghanistan was of course home to both the Yadu race and Shakuni ( Kandahar or Gandhar). It is believed that due to damage and destruction by the sea, Dwaraka has submerged six times and the modern-day Dwarka is the 7th such city to be built in the area. Scientifically speaking, we see that 36 years after the war there were the same repetitions of an eclipse triad as we have shown in the documentary.

Wembley Stadium and the Bible

In the United Kingdom, the world-famous Wembley Stadium (built in 1924), held together by history and sentimentality, was another symbol commemorating Great Britain’s Empire of colonizing greed. The Empire no longer exists and neither does the structured symbol of its “greatness”! A new Sir Norman Foster masterpiece has replaced the worn out monument. Foster’s tour de force has replaced what sentiment could no longer hold together – gone is the crumbling structural edifice that had served its purpose. It had become obsolete. Common sense and reason triumphed. Emotional bonding with the past Wembley legacy and history had to bow to the demands of the 21st century.

So it is with the devotion given to a doctrinally disintegrated Church, its highly suspect book and horridly inhuman ethical teachings from its God must be abandoned – the Biblically sculptured architect and creator must be ditched. The codes and behavioural practices unambiguously commanded by God and chillingly reflected in the lives of those with whom we have rubbed shoulders, need replacing.

How the British Defamed Symbols of Hinduism

With phrases such as primitive, animistic, idol worship, sex, fertility, cannibalism, mythology, animal sacrifice, Brahmanism...

Shiva's Emblem

The British imperialists tried to defame symbols of Hinduism as a strategy for the conquest of India hence there is much misconception regarding Shivalinga.

Note: The Hindu saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa has explained Shiv Linga:

"It is the worship of fatherhood and motherhood. The devotee worshipping the image prays, “O Lord, please grant me that I may not be born into this world again; that I may not have to pass again through a mother’s womb.”

In other words it is about Moksha, which means freedom from the cycle of birth and death but those whose level of thinking cannot attain those heights naturally see what is most dear and near to them, sex.

 Jagganath Puri

Spiritual and intellectual efforts of hundreds of millions of people over millennia have graced India with a rich and complex culture — a culture whose subtlety knows no rival.

The British began their conquest of India from Calcutta, where they established the East India Company — a business venture that was destined to rule India with an iron fist for almost 250 years.

When the Britishers returned to their motherland, they depicted India as a barbaric, uncivilized country filled with polytheism, mythology, and idolatry. The scene they painted portrayed India as a country of primitive worshipers bowed down before a ghastly statue of some god or goddess. To them this represented one of the most hideous examples of human degradation, one of those horrors of ignorance which the British had long left behind. The British summed up India as a hodgepodge of heathenistic superstitions. This attitude toward India and her spirituality was shared by just about every Britisher in India and at home, from the King and Queen of England down to the desk clerk at the East India Company in Calcutta.

They felt nothing of value could be gained from the "primitive Hindus" except their abundance of gold and jewels. However, in actuality the British had stumbled upon the oldest and most civilized society — in terms of spiritual culture — in the world. Sadly, the British view of India was to become the prominent world view of India

During the early days of imperial rule in India, the British received some of their first impressions of India 's spiritual culture via their encounters in the holy city of Jagannath Puri — encounters which plunged the British deep into severe cultural shock. The British described Jagannath as "a frightful visage painted black, with a distended mouth of bloody horror." Seeing the grand procession of the Ratha Yatra, the British experienced further disdain and coined the term "juggernaut." This word gradually found its way into the Oxford Dictionary with the meaning "a massive, inexorable force that crushes everything in its path."

It could hardly be expected that the British should have immediately fallen in love with Jagannath or worshiped him, but at least they could have investigated the meaning and philosophy behind him. Instead they maligned Jagannath to the world as "a horrible, bloodthirsty idol." Lamentable as it was, the British view of India spread throughout the world, and thus for centuries the real beauty of India 's spiritual conceptions remained undiscovered.

But fortunately, we in the Western world are gradually maturing culturally, and are becoming more open-minded and receptive than ever before to learning what India has to offer the West. And Jagannath's big eyes are still beaming, and his wide smile still invites all people to come to Jagannath Puri every year to enjoy the spiritual bliss of the Ratha Yatra.

I have seen this festival with my own eyes, and I doubt that I will ever experience anything quite as prodigious and jubilant in my life.

Charles Bradlaugh (1823 – 1891) was a political activist and one of the most famous English atheists of the 19th century. He founded the National Secular Society, he has remarked that:

"The professors of Christianity for ages supported slavery; the Old Testament repeatedly sanctioned it by special laws; the New Testament has no repealing declaration . . . and it is impossible for any uninformed Christian to deny that the abolition movement in North America was most steadily and bitterly opposed by the religious bodies in the various states . . . the Bible and pulpit, the church and its great influence were used against abolition and in favor of slave owner.

Voltaire, who ardently believed in a God though not in Christianity, quotes the remarkable summing up of arguments against Christianity by Nicholas Freret:

"His most terrible argument is, that if God had deigned to make himself a man and a Jew, and to die in Palestine by an infamous punishment, to expiate the crimes of mankind and to banish sin from the earth, there ought no longer to have been any sin or crime on the face of it; whereas, says he, the Christians have been more abominable monsters than all the sectaries of the other religions put together."

Note:   Englishmen had long since entered India with the plan to spread Christianity, much before the East India Company had landed with the aim to trade. Religious and missionary activities of the Britons needed a proper guiding line to ground themselves steadfastly. Traces can be found in the early 16th century, when missionaries were sent to Mughal courts to impress upon the emperors. That constituted the first phase of Christian missionary activities, which later was aided by the Company traders and officials.

On Jan 15, 1823, Jean-Antoine Dubois, a French-Catholic missionary, who spent time in Pondicherry , Madras Presidency and Mysore left India for Paris , never to return again. During his time in India , he dressed like a native and preached the Gospel, but after 30 years in India , he was convinced that it was next to impossible to convert Indians.

But seven years later, on May 27th, 1830, a Scottish missionary arrived in Calcutta and his goal was to “prepare a mine which should one day explode beneath the very citadel of Hinduism.” This 24 year thought that the methods of other missionaries, like directly appealing Hindus to renounce their faith, would do nothing but anger the natives. Instead he claimed to have found a unique way to destroy Hinduism in a peaceful manner.

To understand how Alexander Duff came up with his recipe, we need to understand the India of 1830s.

  1. The language of the Government was Persian and there were a few educational institutions which taught Arabic and Sanskrit. The learned people spoke these Oriental languages and not English.
  2. Duff arrived at a time when there was a controversy in British India over the language to be used for Indian higher education. On the one side there were the British Orientalists who wanted to use Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic and on the other side there were the Anglicists who had scorn for Oriental languages and Indian culture and wanted to enforce English
  3. The missionary activities were not very successful. The missionary technique consisted of standing in the street corner and preaching which fetched an occasional convert or two, but nothing of great significance. Even in South India , where there were more converts, the converts came from the out castes; the Hindu masses remained unaffected.

Duff would take all these three ingredients to come up with a winning formula, which was eventually endorsed by the Lord himself – I mean Lord Macaulay. Looking back, the formula was simple.

  1. Provide English education for the masses
  2. Make Bible studies an integral part of this education
  3. Be non-apologetic about teaching Christianity.

Thus he would teach Western history, philosophy, and natural sciences and as per the plan Hindus seeing irrationality in their religion would discard their faith voluntarily. But this was tricky business. It was possible that a Hindu who had left Hinduism due to Western education could become agnostic. But Duff would fill that spiritual vacuum with the Christian view of life.

Duff was very clear about what Christian education meant: it was not secular education with some Biblical studies thrown in. For him Christianity contained all knowledge and his goal was to teach with Christianity revelation at the center. When Duff first proposed this method, veteran missionaries did not find it appealing. Still he went ahead without any government support. Bengalis did not mind an English school, but had reservations about an English school where Bible was an important subject. This reservation made it difficult for Duff to get started; he could not even find a building to start his classes.

Though Duff was a proponent of higher studies in English, he did not hate Bengali. He did not want students to be alien to their culture and hence Bengali studies were an important part of the curriculum. After one year, Duff conducted a public exam – in front of parents and the media – and students demonstrated their knowledge in language, science and Bible. This was a huge success and it convinced both Indians and the British. Soon the number of students started increasing. Not everyone in Calcutta was his fan.

But soon Duff got his converts — Krishna Mohan Banerjee, Mohesh Chunder Ghosh, Gopinath Nandi and Anando Chand Mazumdar  — and as he had expected they came from the higher castes. Some of them were Brahmins who ate beef to show their defiance against Hinduism and whose moral vacuum was happily filled by Duff. By this time the Orientalist-Anglicist fight had reached critical mass. The East India Company needed a supply of qualified clerks and there were educational institutions like the Mohammedan college in Calcutta and Sanskrit college in Benares which provided the employees. The company even started a new Sanskrit college in Calcutta and Oriental colleges in Delhi and Agra . A large sum of money was spent in publishing books in the Oriental languages and translating European works into these languages. For the amount of money spent on education, there was not enough demand for these books.

In the language fight, the Government, missionaries and Orientalists wanted to use the Oriental languages, while Duff sided along with the Anglicists. If Indians were to learn Western culture and Christian theology, he said, it was not possible to do it in Sanskrit, Arabic or Persian or the vernacular Bengali. This decision on which language to choose for Duff was very critical and in a later speech given in Scotland , he said that it concerned the ultimate evangelization of India . His arguments against Sanskrit were that (a) it was not perfect for Western education (b) ordinary people did not speak Sanskrit and Western literature was not translated to Sanskrit. Since Sanskrit was tied to Hinduism, even if one were to teach Western literature in Sanskrit, the association formed in the mind of people would of an idolatrous and superstitious religion whereas English, would bring fresh ideas without the burden of association.

Obama seeks light and knowledge from Diwali

In an expansive gesture to Indians worldwide as much as to showcase his – and America’s — multi-cultural affections, US President Barack Obama on Wednesday lit a ceremonial Diwali lamp at the White House to ‘’symbolize victory of light over darkness.”  (Watch Video)

Although it was the Bush White House that began celebrating Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, in 2003, Obama became the first President to personally grace the ceremony — a brief affair that began with a rather incongruous performance by the well-regarded Hindi a-capella group Penn Masala, and ended with a Sanskrit invocation by a priest from the local Siva-Vishnu temple.

”This coming Saturday, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, here in America and around the world, will celebrate this holiday by lighting Diyas, or lamps, which symbolize the victory of light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance,” Obama said on the occasion, adding, ”And while this is a time of rejoicing, it’s also a time for reflection, when we remember those who are less fortunate and renew our commitment to reach out to those in need.”

The Diwali ceremony shared the platform with another event where Obama signed an executive order re-establishing the President’s advisory committee and White House initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. By hosting both events together, the U.S President, who is clearly comfortable being a composite of American, Asia-Pacific, and African cultures, brought together an unusual coalition in the White House East Room of Asian-Americans, Indian-Americans, and Pacific Islanders. All three groups have much in common as successful minorities but seldom work together.

The half-hour East Room celebration was attended by a mixed crowd of hyphenated Asians, Americans, and Indians. India ’s Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and Ambassador Meera Shankar dropped by, and several Indian-Americans in administrative positions in Washington attended. The White House kept it light and simple. A box of Indian mithai (sweets) was placed on some 150 chairs that filled the East Room but there was no food fest or song and dance.

After his remarks, much of which was devoted to the Asian-American initiative, there was a single lamp that Obama lit from a candle. The Siva-Vishnu temple priest, dressed in ceremonial togs with an enormous three-forked tilak on his forehead, kept his invocation short — chanting ”Asatoma Sadgamaya” (Lead us from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to liberation) from the Upanishads.

Obama, having lit the White House diya (a word he handled with aplomb) and wished everyone a ”Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak,” listened intently as the priest ended with ”Om Shanti Shanti.” He returned the priest’s Namaste and then shook his hands before striding out to attend to the business of war. ”Thank you Mr President for being the first president to come to the Diwali ceremony,” a gadabout journalist called out to Obama. ”Yes, how about that,’’ the President shot back.

Brenda Ralph Lewis is the author of several books has observed in her book:

“The darkest days of the papacy was when Christendom was gripped by a hysterical fear of witchcraft or any dissent from the path of ‘true’ religion as ordained by the popes and the Catholic Church. Some of the most heinous crimes ever committed in the name of religion – all of them with papal sanction occurred during the five centuries or so during which a ferocious struggle waged over Europe to eliminate ‘error’: any belief, practice or opinion that deviated from the official papal line. Virtual genocide, for example, eliminated the Cathars, an ascetic sect centered around the southwest of France, who believed that God and the Devil shared the world. In 1231, the first Inquisition was introduced to deal with them. Inquisitors used horrific tortures such as the rack and thumbscrew to extract confessions. The end was often death in the all-consuming flames of the stake. As well as heretics, thousands of supposed witches, wizards, sorcerers and other ‘agents’ of the Devil died in the same horrific way.”

“During the so-called ‘Papal Pornocracy’ of the early tenth century, popes were being manipulated, exploited and maneuvered for nefarious ends by mistresses who used them as pawns in their own power games. With some justification, this era was also called the Rule of the Harlots.”

In Rome, Goddess Durga is not welcome

What does it mean to celebrate Durga Puja in Rome? It means to be humiliated, harassed and hounded by city officials who happen to be pious Christians.

Late Thursday night I was at the park near my house where the local Bengalis organise Durga Puja every year. It’s a raucous celebration of faith and culture. The food stalls are invariably hugely popular and there I was with my nine-year-old daughter, standing in a queue for kathi rolls. After what seemed like an interminable wait, it was our turn to be served. Just then my BlackBerry beeped. Balancing the piping hot rolls, dripping oil, tomato ketchup, green chilli sauce and lemon juice, in one hand, I tried to read the e-mail on my handset.

Will the USCIRF take note of this report and and initiate suitable action?

Meanwhile, let’s not get carried away by the West’s bilious and bogus criticism of 'lack of' religious freedom in India and indulge in self-flagellation. Let the West look at its own ugly, septic warts. If Christians can celebrate Christmas in New Delhi, Hindus have the right to celebrate Durga Puja in Rome. This is non-negotiable.

No luck. I got shoved around, nearly dropped both rolls and my phone, and decided to let the e-mail wait. Later, away from the crowd, I checked the e-mail and it was a fascinating story. Since the identity of the person who had sent the mail is not really relevant, let me reproduce the text: “The Municipal Police authorities of Rome have today withdrawn permission, granted three weeks ago, to celebrate Durga Puja in Rome . The cancellation came a few hours before the Ambassador of India was scheduled to inaugurate the Puja at 8 pm local time. No acceptable explanation has been given. This has caused the local Indian community the loss of thousands of Euros spent in preparatory arrangements. The same thing was done in the same manner in 2008 also. Please monitor developments.”

Now that’s awful, I told myself, here I am having kathi rolls and there they can’t even celebrate their own festival. On Friday, I called a friend in Rome who provided me with the latest details. Our Ambassador, Mr Arif Shahid Khan, a feisty man who has in the past taken up the issue of Sikhs being forced to take off their turbans at Italian airports, campaigned throughout the day, calling up officials, including the Mayor of Rome, and contacting members of the ‘Friends of India’ group in the Italian Parliament, arguing with them why permission for the Puja should be restored. By evening, the authorities had reversed their order and permission was granted to celebrate Durga Puja, which will now begin on Saturday, Ashtami — a full 48 hours behind schedule. Provided, of course, there is no last minute cancellation, as it happened on Thursday. Mr Khan will inaugurate the Puja, an honour he richly deserves.

The story behind the cancellation needs to be told, if only to point out that Christian countries in the West, whose Governments so blithely criticise the ‘lack’ of ‘religious freedom’ in India, have no compunctions about trampling on Hindu sentiments at home.

After last year’s experience, when permission for celebrating Durga Puja in Rome was abruptly withdrawn by officials who cited specious reasons to justify their grossly unfair decision, the organisers, led by Mr Rajesh Sahani, a Sindhi from Kolkata who speaks flawless Bengali, took ample precautions this year. They were given permission to organise the Puja at Parko Centocelle, a public park on Via Cailina, Torpignattara. Three weeks ago, permission was granted for the Puja at the park and necessary formalities were completed.

Early this past week, the Puja organisers were told they could not use the park as a crime had been committed there and the location posed security-related problems. The organisers agreed to change the venue. Another park was selected, permission was given to celebrate Durga Puja there, and the preparations began all over again in right earnest. Then, like a bolt from the blue, at 4 pm on Thursday came the withdrawal of permission by the Municipal Police. The organisers were bluntly told to pack up and leave hours before Durga Puja was scheduled to begin with Akal Bodhon in the evening. Why? No reason was proffered.

Christian Intolerance?  Double standards - When in Rome, only Monotheism

The President of Italy, Mr Giorgio Napoletano, has been vociferous in demanding that Europe should do more in support of Christians in India and to help them ‘affirm their right to religious freedom’. The Government of Italy has in the past summoned the Ambassador of India to convey to him that it has “deep concern and sensitivity for the ongoing inter-religious violence... that has caused the death of many Christians.” The Pope has been no less harsh in denouncing India .

Some officials are believed to have told the organisers that the cancellation of permission at the eleventh hour, both last year and this year, was meant to be “retaliatory action against the persecution of Christians in India ”. It may be recalled that the President of Italy, Mr Giorgio Napoletano, has been vociferous in demanding that Europe should do more in support of Christians in India and to help them ‘affirm their right to religious freedom’. The Government of Italy has in the past summoned the Ambassador of India to convey to him that it has “deep concern and sensitivity for the ongoing inter-religious violence... that has caused the death of many Christians.” The Pope has been no less harsh in denouncing India .

There could be another reason, apart from its “deep concern” about the welfare of Christians in India, for Italy’s callous disregard of the sentiments of Hindus in that country. Although the Italian Constitution guarantees religious freedom, under the Lateran Treaty with the Vatican , Italy recognises only the three religions of Semitic origin — Christianity, Judaism and Islam. All other religions are no more than paganism and are to be shamed and shunned. The Vatican would not countenance any open breach of the Lateran Treaty; Italy would not want to be seen as recognising Hinduism.

“It’s only natural that Italy should have a surfeit of churches. But it’s the rejection of any other faith than Christianity, Judaism and Islam that explains why there are so many mosques but virtually no temples in Italy although this country has a large Hindu expatriate population,” my friend told me while regretting the attitude of the Government and the local authorities. According to him, there are only three temples in Italy : One in a garage in Venice ; another at Frescolo and the third at Reggio Emilia. These survive at the mercy of local zoning officials.

But for Mr Arif Shahid Khan’s pro-active involvement — most Ambassadors tend to stay aloof from community affairs — this year too there would have been no Durga Puja in Rome. Indians in Italy owe him a debt of gratitude. So do Bangladeshis who are equal participants in this annual celebration of dharma’s victory over adharma, of the triumph of good over evil. Cultural and linguistic affinities unite Bengalis, irrespective of whether they are from the west or east of Padma, during this autumnal festival celebrated around the world.

Meanwhile, let’s not get carried away by the West’s bilious and bogus criticism of 'lack of' religious freedom in India and indulge in self-flagellation. Let the West look at its own ugly, septic warts. If Christians can celebrate Christmas in New Delhi , Hindus have the right to celebrate Durga Puja in Rome . This is non-negotiable.

When in Rome, only Monotheism

By the end of the Middle Ages, Christianity had so permeated European culture that the ancient religions had become completely foreign — foreign gods, foreign stories, and foreign concepts — despite the fact that the remains of ancient religion were literally lying all around at people’s feet. There existed, then, a curious contradiction in that Europeans were close physically but distant psychologically from the religious beliefs of ancient Rome and Greece. The Christianity which pervaded European culture was meant to be taken seriously and literally. Christianity was true and there was really no room for fiction. Ancient mythology, however, was fiction and people weren’t accustomed to that.

(source: The Mirror of the Gods: How Renaissance Artists Rediscovered the Pagan Gods – By Malcolm Bull - book review).

Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826), the third President of the United States (1801–1809), the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) had this to say about Christianity:

“There is one notable thing about our Christianity: bad, bloody, merciless, money-grabbing and predatory as it is - in our country particularly, and in all other Christian countries in a somewhat modified degree… Ours is a terrible religion. The fleets of the world could swim in spacious comfort in the innocent blood it has spilt …The gospel history of Jesus consists of fabrications, superstitions and fanaticism… I consider the book of Revelation, the ravings of a maniac…. Due to Christianity, millions of innocent men, women and children have been burnt alive as witches.” “Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.”

“It is between fifty and sixty years since I read it (i.e. the Book of Revelations), and I then considered it merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherence of our own nightly dreams.”

Thomas Jefferson had earlier captured the essence of the American spirit about religion when he observed that his statute for religious freedom in Virginia was

"meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mahometan, the Hindoo and infidel of every denomination"—and those of no faith whatever. The American culture of religious liberty helped create a busy free market of faith: by disestablishing churches, the nation made religion more popular, not less.

I don’t blame the officials in Rome. They are at least not being hypocritical in their action. They are monotheists and their religion says that non-monotheists are destined for eternal torment in the hell their god has prepared for people like me (atheists) and polytheists (like most Hindus supposedly are.) The previous bishop of Rome , the pope, visited India some years ago and had the gall to tell Indians that they need to be saved — and he said this during Diwali — and that the Catholic church will bring India under the cross. That instrument of torture and death that they proudly wear around their necks.

But anyway, India cannot do much about this blatant slap on the face. The Indian government headed by Manmohan Singh works for Sonia Gandhi, an Italian by birth and a Roman Catholic by faith. The head of the state, the president of India, is Pratibha Patil. Ms Patil occupies that position at the pleasure of Sonia Gandhi. Neither Manmohan Singh nor Pratibha Patil can criticize the Italian government or the Vatican because Sonia Gandhi would not allow it.

Divided loyalties is the main reason that people of foreign birth are not allowed to hold high office in most civilized nation states. What a sorry state of affairs. Sad, very very sad but then one has to remember that Indians voted to put a foreigner into the driving seat. The mentality of an occupied people is not easy to change. The British left over 60 years ago but the mentality that elevates white-skinned people other brown-skinned ones is too deeply rooted into the collective psyche.

We are, as the song goes, prisoners of our own device.

Proselystization destroyed innumerable cultures and depleted the wisdom of the human race
The West has the most brutalized indigenous populations in the world

Concerns for missionary aggression are not unique to India, but are universally experienced by native communities struggling to withstand assault from organized evangelism. In 2001, the World Congress for the Preservation of Religious Diversity met in New Delhi and discussed the problems of indigenous faiths, especially in the light of the inadequacy of protection afforded by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1948.

Proselystization destroyed innumerable cultures and depleted the wisdom of the human race. Deploring unwholesome practices to encourage conversions, the World Congress noted that organizations, like the Church Planting Movement, had set up aggressive targets for the conversion of Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists. In one region of India, the number of churches rose from 547 in 1996 to 2000 in 1998, and more than 55,000 persons were converted to Christianity in just seven years. The World Congress asserted that such massive conversions could not be entirely voluntary, and that they necessarily resulted in animosity and retaliation among religious groups.

The World Congress for the Preservation of Religious Diversity resolved, inter alia, that proselythizing a person living in a community with a particular religious tradition is an act of violence against the person, the community and the religious tradition; that individuals and groups have the legitimate right to defend their religious tradition against proselytization; that it is imperative to preserve religious diversity and foster mutual respect for all religions through appropriate legislation and that a person converted from an indigenous tradition, culture, faith and belief has a right to return to his or her traditional belief.

The incessant pressure on surviving indigenous groups compelled the UN General Assembly to a late but timely recognize the worldwide loss of cultural diversity due to centuries of unwholesome physical and cultural annihilation of indigenous communities by politically organized religious groups. Eventually, the decade of 1995-2004 was dedicated as the International Decade of Indigenous Peoples, following global acknowledgement that native communities, estimated at around three hundred million worldwide, suffer extreme hardships as they struggle to retain their distinct cultural and religious traditions and lifestyles. UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali had said that indigenous had been pushed to ‘the margins of national and international life.’

On 13 September 2007, after more than twenty years of negotiations between nation states and indigenous peoples, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples with an overwhelming majority of 143 votes in favor, four against (Canada,  Australia, New Zealand, United States), and eleven abstentions.

It is not without irony that the countries that voted against the declaration have the most brutalized indigenous populations in the world, and an unedifying history of genocide and almost unending atrocities. Australia and Canada have offered apologies for their treatment to the aborigines. (Australia – Stolen generations, Canada – residential school for aborigines). Neither the United States nor New Zealand have so far apologized, or signaled intent to do so.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom’s India Chapter report on the extent of religious freedom in India released last week was an unwelcome ‘gift’ to India on the eve of its 62nd Independence Day. The report deserves to be flung into the nearest trash bin not because its prejudiced contents are predictable but because it’s the latest instance of America’s self-arrogated right to meddle with a sovereign republic’s internal affairs.

India firmly refused to issue visas to the USCIRF team despite recurrent requests earlier this year. This is entirely consistent with our time-honoured tradition of disallowing such intrusive adventures by foreign powers. The fact that the USCIRF’s India Chapter has released its report without first-hand experience of the situation here further bolsters its non-existent credibility. The 14-page report mentions the visa denial in a footnote, a clever ploy to make it appear as if the team studied things on the field.

Perusing the report confirms suspicions: It is based on a mix of hearsay, biased media reports, ‘verdicts’ of the Gujarat NGO cottage industry, and exhibits a total absence of the historical sense required to analyse socio-religious dynamics. Which makes it cushy to draw this conclusion: Hindu organisations are always the perpetrators of every act of societal conflagration. The USCIRF seems to have drawn this conclusion first and then sewn the ‘facts’ to arrive at it.

Avatar The Movie – Similarities with Hindu Teachings and symbols and concepts in Hinduism

In the Hollywood movie Avatar, it is not just the term ‘Avatar’ that is associated with Hinduism. The core concept of Hinduism is that all animate and inanimate are the result of a single energy source, which is Brahman or God. All the plants, animals, human beings rise and fall in this single energy source. This formless and indefinable is given form by humans and worshipped as God. One of the important themes of Avatar is based on this core concept of Hinduism which was taught first time more than 5000 years ago. In the movie, the Na'vis are able to physically connect to animals and plants. And they believe that they are just a part of the whole which includes all animate and inanimate present on their planet Pandora. This concept is explained beautifully and there is a magical scene in which the Tree is connected to the human body and this body is connected to all the Na’vis through holding their hands each other.

Another striking aspect is the use of the color blue. Hindu Gods are depicted blue in color. Blue is the color of the infinite. All Hindu gods are an attempt by the human mind to give form to the formless Brahman (God). The color blues symbolizes immeasurable and all pervading reality – formless Brahman.

Another concept found in Hindu Puranas is Parakaya Pravesham – leaving one’s body temporarily and entering the body of another person. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have done this to enter a king’s body so that he can learn about material world. Something quite similar happens in the movies as Humans are able to temporarily enter the body of a Na’vi.

A more visible symbol in the movie is that of the characters in Avatar riding on a flying dragon like being. This is more like Lord Vishnu riding on Garuda.

It is said that great minds think alike in all ages. The great saints of Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) thought about this 5000 years ago and they tried to explain it to us through symbols and stories. Today we have technology explain the universal truths. But are we listening? We are slowly wiping out the green cover and destroying the Mother Earth thinking that we humans are superior and above all.

But what Avatar missed is foreseen by Hindu seers the total annihilation of human race when there is rise of Adharma (today it is unimaginable greed and lack of concern for mother earth). We are fast heading towards such a situation and this divine action will be carried out by Kalki. Then there is a fresh beginning. The cycle continues and this present age is not the first cycle and it is not the last.

Cameron’s Avatar: The emerging zeitgeist?

Every now and then, a book, a play, or film, marks a watershed in the landscape of culture when it represents most eloquently a growing and world-changing (or “epoch making” as Marxists used to say) awareness. James Cameron’s Avatar may well be one of those symbolic milestones. Yet, the message of Avatar synthesizes some of the most powerful calls that mankind is hearing nowadays: the appeal for a new communion with nature on the cosmic scale, the yearning for disclosure about the reality of other life forms from outside our planet, and the eternal nostalgia for legends and mythology which formed civilization from its origins.

The Na’vi remind us of all bow and arrow wielding tribal peoples of warm climes, but they particularly evoke images of the blue-green divine heroes of ancient India, Rama and Krishna, whose wisdom and omniscience reflected their profound union with the Cosmic Whole which Cameron calls Eywa, the universal mother who embraces and comprises all creation, according to a concept embedded in Tantric philosophy.

Those people of the Pandoran forest will also remind people familiar with Indic culture, from Mongolia to Indonesia, of the Monkey people or Vanaras met by Rama and his companions in the deep woods of Central India, and who became his allies under the leadership of their king Sugriva and their champion Hanuman.

Like the Vedic peoples, but also like many other ancient races on all continents, the Na’vi are said to go through a ritual process of second birth (samsrkt dvija) which ushers them in as full members of the social and universal community of life and soul.

Cameron makes it clear that the only option for survival and for the preservation of our environment is to overthrow the tyranny of finance and technology enforced by the warlords of the Pentagon and their soldiers of fortune and misfortune. His film is a rousing call for defiance and rebellion that many in the US civilian and military sectors may eventually heed, and it is symbolically enlightening and also inevitable that he should conceive an iconography reminiscent of the Hindu sacred epics in order to convey this radical and apocalyptic message. What splendid depictions of the Indian myths and legends could be made nowadays by using the stereoscopic and virtual camera “motion capture” techniques, aptly called “3D Fusion Camera System”, pioneered in Avatar!

New movie Avatar shines light on Hindu word

In James Cameron's new film, Avatar, the Titanic director creates a world where humans take on the form of avatars to exist on a planet called Pandora. The humans that belong to these avatars control them through technology, but some use their powerful avatar bodies for evil as they try to ruin the resources of the planet.

The term “avatar” might already be familiar to those who play virtual reality games where avatars are movable images representing real people. Avatar's origins, however, come from the Sanskrit language in sacred Hindu texts, and it's a term for divine beings sent to restore goodness to Earth. Hinduism, the third-largest religion in the world with about 1 billion adherents, began many centuries ago on the Indian subcontinent, and a majority of the world's Hindus reside in India .

Those who practice Hinduism recognize three main deities. Lord Brahma is considered the creator of the universe; Lord Vishnu is considered the sustainer of the universe, to right things when needed; and Lord Shiva is the redeemer of the universe.

It is believed that these deities sent avatars — incarnations of themselves in human form — to perform “dharma,” or righteous duty, to right wrongs or to restore peace and goodness.

Hindu theology names 10 numbered avatars. Two of the most important from Hindu scripture are Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu and written about in the poem Ramayana; and Lord Krishna, written about in the mythological poem Mahabharata.

The avatar Lord Krishna appears to assist Arjuna, one of the five Pandava family brothers, reveals his divinity to him and encourages him that it is his duty to fight for right.

***

The Mahabharata, the world's longest epic poem at more than 90,000 verses and one of the most important Hindu texts, tells of a battle between bad forces and the Pandava family. The avatar Lord Krishna appears to assist Arjuna, one of the five Pandava family brothers, reveals his divinity to him and encourages him that it is his duty to fight for right. Illustrations of these Hindu avatars, which are magnificently detailed and reflect an aura of divinity, are in stark contrast to Cameron's alien-meets-robot-warrior look in the film. Despite the very different avatar interpretations, local Hindus' reverence for specific avatars from their scripture does not conflict with how they are seeing the modern usage of the term.

Vatican slams 'Avatar'

Vatican doesn’t like ‘Avatar’ because it allegedly promotes ‘pseudo-doctrines’ of pantheism and worship of nature. What is wrong with worshipping God’s creation, I ask you? The sun, the moon, the stars, the air, the trees, the rivers, the sea, the plants – we cannot live a single day without them.

Protests as Vatican Slams Avatar and Pantheist Nature-Worship

Lynn Townsend White (1907 - 1987) Professor in Department of History University of California, Los Angeles, California wrote:

"The victory of Christianity over paganism was the greatest psychic revolution in the history of our culture. It has become fashionable today to say that, for better or worse, we bye in "the pos-Christian age." Certainly the forms of our thinking and language have largely ceased to be Christian, but to my eye the substance often remains amazingly akin to that of the past. Our daily habits of action, for example, are dominated by an implicit faith in perpetual progress which was unknown either to Greco-Roman antiquity or to the Orient. It is rooted in, and is indefensible apart from, Judeo-Christian teleology. The fact that Communists share it merely helps to show what can he demonstrated on many other grounds: that Marxism, like Islam, is a Judeo-Christian heresy. We continue today to live, as we have lived for about 1700 years, very largely in a context of Christian axioms."

"By destroying pagan animism, Christianity made it possible to exploit nature in a mood of indifference to the feelings of natural objects."

Vatican sees Pantheism as a growing threat ?

Pantheists are protesting as Vatican media slam the movie Avatar for promoting Pantheism, only a few days after the Pope attacked Pantheism in his New Year’s address.

Pantheists focus on religious reverence for Nature and the wider Universe rather than for any supernatural God or gods. Concern for Nature is a central ethical concern, and Nature is also viewed as a major source of spiritual comfort.

“It seems like the Vatican sees Pantheism as a growing threat,” said Dr Paul Harrison, president of the World Pantheist Movement.  “Maybe that’s because the whole world is undergoing a tremendous shift in values because of climate change and disappearing species. As our destruction of Nature rebounds on us, people are realizing that Nature needs to be a central value in our lives. More and more people are also turning to Nature for relief from life’s stresses, and for a sense of real belonging.”

How Jesuits Took Calculus from India to  Europe

At the International Conference on Indian History, Civilisation and Geopolitics (ICIH 2009) that was held at New Delhi in January, Dr. C.K. Raju presented a brilliant paper about how calculus, an Indian invention, was picked up by the Jesuit priests from Kerala in the second half of the 16th century and taken to Europe. This is how the Westerners got their calculus. Overtime, people forgot this link and the Europeans began to claim calculus as their own invention. This myth still persists despite calculus texts existing in India since thousands of years.

‘Calculus is India ’s Gift to Europe

In his speech at ICIH 2009, Professor C.K. Raju revealed that calculus was an Indian invention that was transmitted by Jesuit priests to Europe from Cochin in the second half of 16th century. “Indian infinite series has been known to British scholars since at least 1832, but no scholar tried to establish the connection with the calculus attributed to Newton and Leibnitz,” he said. Dr. Raju’s 10-year research that included archival work in Kerala and Rome was published in a book “Cultural Foundations of Mathematics.” It established that the Jesuit priests took trigonometric tables and planetary models from the Kerala mathematicians of the Aryabhata school and exported them to Europe starting around 1560 in connection with the European navigational problem.

“When the Europeans received the Indian calculus, they couldn’t understand it properly because the Indian philosophy of mathematics is different from the Western philosophy of mathematics. It took them about 300 years to fully comprehend its working. The calculus was used by Newton to develop his laws of physics,” Dr. Raju added. Ironically, some British scholars claimed credit for this research despite being warned against plagiarizing Professor Raju’s work.

The Infinitesimal Calculus: How and Why it Was Imported into Europe - By C.K. Raju

It is well known that the “Taylor-series” expansion, that is at the heart of calculus, existed in India in widely distributed mathematics / astronomy / timekeeping (“jyotisa”) texts which preceded Newton and Leibniz by centuries. Why were these texts imported into Europe ? These texts, and the accompanying precise sine values computed using the series expansions, were useful for the science that was at that time most critical to Europe : navigation. The ‘jyotisa’ texts were specifically needed by Europeans for the problem of determining the three “ells”: latitude, loxodrome, and longitude.

Jesuit records show that they sought out these texts as inputs to the Gregorian calendar reform. This reform was needed to solve the ‘latitude problem’ of European navigation. The Jesuits were equipped with the knowledge of local languages as well as mathematics and astronomy that were required to understand these Indian texts. The Jesuits also needed these texts to understand the local customs and how the dates of traditional festivals were fixed by Indians using the local calendar (“panchânga”). How the mathematics given in these Indian ancient texts subsequently diffused into Europe (e.g. through clearing houses like Mersenne and the works of Cavalieri, Fermat, Pascal, Wallis, Gregory, etc.) is yet another story. The calculus has played a key role in the development of the sciences, starting from the “Newtonian Revolution”. According to the “standard” story, the calculus was invented independently by Leibniz and Newton . This story of indigenous development, ab initio, is now beginning to totter, like the story of the “Copernican Revolution”.

The English-speaking world has known for over one and a half centuries that “Taylor series” expansions for sine, cosine and arctangent functions were found in Indian mathematics / astronomy / timekeeping (‘jyotisa’) texts, and specifically in the works of Madhava, Neelkantha, Jyeshtadeva, etc. No one else, however, has so far studied the connection of these Indian developments to European mathematics.

The connection is provided by the requirements of the European navigational problem, the foremost problem of the time in Europe. Columbus and Vasco da Gama used dead reckoning and were ignorant of celestial navigation. Navigation, however, was both strategically and economically the key to the prosperity of Europe of that time. Accordingly, various European governments acknowledged their ignorance of navigation while announcing huge rewards to anyone who developed an appropriate technique of navigation. These rewards spread over time from the appointment of Nunes as Professor of Mathematics in 1529, to the Spanish government’s prize of 1567 through its revised prize of 1598, the Dutch prize of 1636, Mazarin’s prize to Morin of 1645, the French offer (through Colbert) of 1666, and the British prize legislated in 1711.

Many key scientists of the time (Huygens, Galileo, etc.) were involved in these efforts. The navigational problem was the specific objective of the French Royal Academy, and a key concern for starting the British Royal Society. Prior to the clock technology of the 18th century, attempts to solve the European navigational problem in the 16th and 17th centuries focused on mathematics and astronomy. These were (correctly) believed to hold the key to celestial navigation. It was widely (and correctly) held by navigational theorists and mathematicians (e.g. by Stevin and Mersenne) that this knowledge was to be found in the ancient mathematical, astronomical and time-keeping (jyotisa) texts of the East

Jesuits such as Matteo Ricci (1522 - 1610) who trained in mathematics and astronomy under Clavius’ new syllabus were sent to India. In a 1581 letter, Ricci explicitly acknowledged that he was trying to understand the local methods of time-keeping (‘jyotisa’) from the Brahmins and Moors in the vicinity of Cochin.

Cochin was then the key centre for mathematics and astronomy since the Vijaynagar Empire had sheltered it from the continuous onslaughts of Islamic raiders from the north. Language was not a problem for the Jesuits since they had established a substantial presence in India. They had a college in Cochin and had even established printing presses in local languages like Malayalam and Tamil by the 1570’s.

We Are All Hindus Now says Lisa Miller

Then why are the Churches indulging in an aggressive proselytization in India?

This chapter is in no way anti-Christian or anti-Islam but rather anti-conversion and anti-terrorism. It provides information about the insidious campaign that is taking place to reduce and wipeout Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and other Vedic traditions that are followed by large sections of humanity in India and around the world.

Hindus and Hinduism face two grave threats - Conversion and Terrorism

"Any sensible man is unknowingly a Hindu and that the only hope for man lies in the abolition of the erratic, dogmatic, unphilosophical creeds people today call religions."

Alain Danielou, 1907-1994, French philosopher.

“Religion is a Western concept; the Indian concept is neither religion nor even Hinduism nor any ‘ism’ – it is Sanatana Dharma, the eternal law of the universe, which cannot be formulated in any rigid and final set of tenets.”
                         -
Michel Danino, 1956-, French author.

"Unlike early Judaism, Christianity and Mohammedanism (all obsessed with time) Hinduism and Buddhism have never been persecuting faiths, have preached almost no holy wars and have refrained from that proselytizing religious imperialism which has gone hand in hand with political and economic oppression of colored people."
                       -
Aldous Huxley, 1894-1963, English novelist and essayist.

"A millennium before Europeans were willing to divest themselves of the Biblical idea that the world was a few thousand years old, the Mayans were thinking of millions and the Hindus billions." – Carl Sagan

Hinduism spreads its wings just by virtue of its sheer knowledge, wisdom and spirituality.

America is not a Christian nation. We are, it is true, a nation founded by Christians, and according to a 2008 survey, 76 percent of us continue to identify as Christian (still, that's the lowest percentage in American history). Of course, we are not a Hindu—or Muslim, or Jewish, or Wiccan—nation, either.

A million-plus Hindus live in the United States, a fraction of the billion who live on Earth.

But recent poll data show that conceptually, at least, we are slowly becoming more like Hindus and less like traditional Christians in the ways we think about God, our selves, each other, and eternity.

The Rig Veda, the most ancient Hindu scripture, says this: "Truth is One, but the sages speak of it by many names."

A Hindu believes there are many paths to God. Jesus is one way, the Qur'an is another, yoga practice is a third. None is better than any other; all are equal. The most traditional, conservative Christians have not been taught to think like this. They learn in Sunday school that their religion is true, and others are false. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me."

Refer to Christianisation of Chennai Doordarshan's Channel - By Thamizhchelvan - vijayvaani.com

Americans are no longer buying it. According to a 2008 Pew Forum survey, 65 percent of us believe that "many religions can lead to eternal life"—including 37 percent of white evangelicals, the group most likely to believe that salvation is theirs alone. Also, the number of people who seek spiritual truth outside church is growing. Thirty percent of Americans call themselves "spiritual, not religious," according to a 2009 NEWSWEEK Poll, up from 24 percent in 2005.

Stephen Prothero, religion professor at Boston University , has long framed the American propensity for "the divine-deli-cafeteria religion" as "very much in the spirit of Hinduism. You're not picking and choosing from different religions, because they're all the same," he says. "It isn't about orthodoxy. It's about whatever works. If going to yoga works, great—and if going to Catholic mass works, great. And if going to Catholic mass plus the yoga plus the Buddhist retreat works, that's great, too."

Then there's the question of what happens when you die. Christians traditionally believe that bodies and souls are sacred, that together they comprise the "self," and that at the end of time they will be reunited in the Resurrection. You need both, in other words, and you need them forever. Hindus believe no such thing. At death, the body burns on a pyre, while the spirit—where identity resides—escapes.

In reincarnation, central to Hinduism, selves come back to earth again and again in different bodies. So here is another way in which Americans are becoming more Hindu: 24 percent of Americans say they believe in reincarnation, according to a 2008 Harris poll. So agnostic are we about the ultimate fates of our bodies that we're burning them—like Hindus—after death. More than a third of Americans now choose cremation, according to the Cremation Association of North America, up from 6 percent in 1975. "I do think the more spiritual role of religion tends to deemphasize some of the more starkly literal interpretations of the Resurrection," agrees Diana Eck, professor of comparative religion at Harvard.

So let us all say "Om."

“We are all Hindus now” by Lisa Miller (NewsWeek Aug 31, 2009) was a startling article. It has been known now that in the U.S.A. Christianity is on the wane. The same can be said of Europe . It is not shocking that convents and seminaries do not have new recruits. Many of the churches have closed down--Dioceses are unable to pay the heavy compensations the priests have been charged to pay for their sexual exploits and pedophilic escapades. According to a 2008 survey 76 percent continued to identify themselves as Christians yet the author asserts that, We are all Hindus now’.

It sounds too flippant and too superficial and exhibits a poor understanding of Hinduism. But at the same time it is a testimony of the ever fresh spring of Life -- that is Hinduism -- small wonder that it has suddenly become like an oasis beckoning the Americans. If the Americans want to identify as Hindus it is a welcome step in the right direction. This is what the great Indian monk Swami Vivekananda dreamt of and worked for. But it calls for study, acceptance of Sanatana Dharma -- and Dharma as way of life.

To get back to Lisa Miller and her exclamation, “We are all Hindus now”, is a bit too farfetched. But this does establish the fact that Christianity is no longer what it was some 50 years ago even in Christian country like the USA . It has lost its sheen; its hold. The whole beliefs systems and dogmas are being questioned. So what immediately comes to my mind is, then, why are the churches indulging in an aggressive proselytization in India ? Is it to make up for the numbers and is it because Indians are vulnerable and are easily led?

Is it because what is being discarded in USA is being dumped into India?

Refer to Tear Down That Wall - Refer to God's Moment for India and Nityananda videos – testing time for Hindus - By Radha Rajan - vijayvaani.com

I would not agree with Lisa Miller that the Americans are Hindus now. Hinduism is not a religion into which one can walk in and walk out. Hinduism is a philosophy, an ideology and a way of life. It permeates the whole range of one’s life and activities. Unlike the Christian religion it cannot be kept in a separate compartment from the rest of one’s various life activities. Spirituality cannot be easily attained. There are no quick fixes. A pill for headache--another for body pain, another for sleep--whatever suits and whatever be the need, are just short remedies. Spirituality calls for a lifelong search--a going into oneself and then coming out like the spires that reach the heavens. It calls for discipline, for continuity, for perseverance.

What is true is that Hinduism had never been an exclusive, monolithic, and dogmatic. It can never be. So may be, having been in one, the Christians feel that it has no discipline and not rigorous. Far from it--the difference is it gives space for self discovery--does not dictate and thrust dogmas and stifles thinking. It encourages and liberates one to follow in one’s own pace the Ultimate Reality. The quest for truth and the freedom of enquiry are the hallmarks of Hinduism. Spirituality cannot be attained by a mixture of this and that from all religions. It is a lifelong quest based on Vedanta which leads to Vedantic vision of Reality.

By accepting cremation, the Catholic Church has only sought out what is most convenient. As far as my knowledge goes, till date, not a single priest or nun has been cremated in India . The acceptance of cremation is based on convenience and hard facts. In India there is no place for burial of the ordinary Catholic, especially the poor. The lands, belonging to the church, have all been misused by the church and sold to developers. But for priests and nuns burial land has been reserved--in these lands the ordinary Catholics cannot find a place. This is a simple fact and as time passes land is shrinking and usage of land becoming money spinning business. Will the Pope be cremated?

So where does the belief of body and soul sacred which is ‘self’ stand today? Lisa cannot use the cremation as an indicator to claim that ‘Americans are becoming more Hindu’, the comparison is misplaced. One cannot become more Hindu and less Hindu and the cremation which is a mode of convenient disposal of the corpse be a testimony to that. A whole lot of insights precede and culminate in jivanmukti’-- cremation is part of this.

The Intolerance of Monotheism?

Conversion is Intolerance and Intolerance implies superiority of faith

Single-pointed objective of Christianizing the world

***

Gore Vidal (1925 -   )  well known American writer, the eminent historian, and a public figure for over fifty years, in his Lowell Lecture at Harvard University given April 20, 1996 observed:

“When the white race broke out of Europe 500 years ago,… inspired by a raging sky-god, the whites were able to pretend that their conquests were in order to bring the One God to everyone, particularly those with older and subtler religions. ………

“From a barbaric Bronze Age text known as the Old Testament, ...antihuman religions have evolved ... Christianity, Islam. These are sky-god religions. They are, literally, patriarchal --God is the omnipotent father-- hence the loathing of women for 2,000 years. The sky-god is a jealous god, of course. Those who would reject him must be converted or killed for their own good. Ultimately, totalitarianism is the only sort of politics that can truly serve the sky-god's purpose. Any movement of a liberal nature endangers his authority and that of his delegates on earth. One God, one King, one Pope, one master in the factory, one father-leader in the family home."

“I regard monotheism as the greatest disaster ever to befall the human race. I see no good in Christianity, or Islam -- good people, yes, but any religion based on a single, well, frenzied and virulent god, is not as useful to the human race …” “More people have been killed in the name of Jesus Christ than any other name in the history of the world.”

"Christianity is such a silly religion."

Jonathan Kirsch author of several books including The Harlot by the Side of the Road and God against Gods and The Grand Inquisitor's Manual: A History of Terror in the Name of God has written that:

"Monotheism - the belief "that only a single deity is worthy of worship for the simple reason that only a single deity exists" is responsible for three millennia of religious intolerance and persecution, up to and including the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Those events he terms "only the most recent example of the violence that men and women are inspired to commit against their fellow human beings by their true belief in the Only True God." By comparison with exclusivist monotheism, Kirsch thinks that tolerant polytheism gets a bad rap. "At the heart of polytheism is an open-minded and easygoing approach to religious belief and practice," he asserts, the opposite of monotheism's dangerous "tendency to regard one's own rituals and practices as the only proper way to worship the one true god."

Karlheinz Deschner (1924  ) is a German researcher and writer who has achieved public attention in Europe for his thorough and fiercely critical treatment of Christianity in general and the Catholic Church in particular, as expressed in several articles and books, culminating in his opus The Criminal History of Christianity. He has described the barbarism of The Inquisition thus:

Torture, the Most Compelling Instrument of Christian Brotherly Love

"The prisons of the Inquisition were places of unimaginable cruelty, dark and confined by papal prescription, usually without any light or ventilation but full of filth and stench. The clergy filled these places to the point that Gregory IX ordered the building of more and promised generous indulgences to Christians who would contribute to their construction. Sentences served in these hellholes were far worse than any quick death by fire at the stake. Men and women often languished for years without being sentenced or acquitted. A man by the name of Wilhelm Salavert was first interrogated on February 24, 1300 and finally sentenced on September 30, 1319, after 19 years of uninterrupted misery. A woman in Toulouse was “reprieved to bearing the Cross” after lying in the local prisons for 33 years."

Cultural Extinction of the Hindus?

To compensate for losses in Europe by expanding their numbers in India?

Pope Benedict XVI who heads the largest religious group in the world, in this message encourages his followers to “make disciples of all peoples” and says that the Church works “to lead all people to Christ, the salvation of the world.”

The Pope further tells his followers- "The goal of the Church’s mission is to illumine all peoples with the light of the Gospel as they journey through history towards God, so that in Him they may reach their full potential and fulfilment. We should have a longing and a passion to illumine all peoples with the light of Christ that shines on the face of the Church, so that all may be gathered into the one human family, under God’s loving fatherhood.”

Pope Benedict points out-”Christ calls, justifies, sanctifies and sends his disciples to proclaim the Kingdom of God, so that all nations may become the People of God.”

He stresses-The whole Church must be committed to the missio ad gentes, until the salvific sovereignty of Christ is fully accomplished: “At present, it is true, we are not able to see that all things are in subjection to him”.

Rabbi Jonathan B Freirich and Rajan Zed (who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism) argue that instead the Pope, being a respected religious world leader, should attempt to bring various religions together to work as a team on common world religious and human concerns like economic and social development, peace-making and peace-keeping, freedom and human rights, ecological responsibility. Religion tells us to rise from our own selfish concerns and work for the higher ideals of welfare of all humanity.

We all seek the truth. As we head in the same direction, so in our shared quest for the truth, let us learn from one another and thus come closer to the truth, Freirich and Zed point out. Moreover, if God wanted us to be one homogeneous people with a single belief system, God would have done it. Existence of different faith traditions exhibited God’s generosity and bountifulness, they said and added that Pope Benedict, who was a renowned theologian and had served as professor at various German universities, very well knew that religion being a complex component of human life encompasses much more that our own particular tradition or experience.

Jewish and Hindu leaders urged Pope to initiate dialogue among world religions because dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment and help us to overcome prejudices passed on to us from previous generations.

Mission to Christianize the World
Inculturation: Crime and cunningness of Catholic Church

"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. The materialism of affluent Christian countries appears to contradict the claims of Jesus Christ that says it's not possible to worship both Mammon and God at the same time."   -  Mahatma Gandhi

Rupert Hughes, historian (1889 – 1956) has remarked that:

"Of all the religions ...the Christian religion has the most horrible record"

How can anybody believe contradictory statements, -- and there are three hundred downright mathematical contradictions in the Bible. Jehoshaphat's death is given sixteen different dates!

The God of the Bible punishes all who do not believe, including those who never heard of him. Trillions of them must be screaming somewhere for mercy. What then must be waiting for me? for I have not their excuse. I have heard the gospel. I had it put before me. I accepted it, and then let it slip!

"Wherein lies this so much trumpeted beauty of Christianity, when it is plain, indisputable fact that no other religion ever approached or attempted to approach the unbearable beastliness of Christianity? It stings me to think of it. I could break down and sob with pity for the poor dear people that were caught in those traps of theology and tormented slowly into their graves. Yet these things happened at the very zenith of the power of the Christian religion.

Montezuma was a heathen and his religion included, like the early Christian religion, human sacrifices and hideous cruelty. Yet when the Christians conquered him their cruelties made him seem merciful by contrast. This American continent of ours, discovered and colonized by Christians, was largely depopulated by the lust for murder that seemed inherent in the faith. The pages of Las Casas can hardly be read without agony; yet according to Lea's "Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies" the whole object of the Spanish conquest of America was the propagation of the Christian faith, and it was so stated in a bull of Pope Alexander VI.

After the New World was rid of its primitive peoples, after the beautiful civilization of the Incas was destroyed, after the Mayas and all their books were annihilated and their country restored to the jungle, the Christians had only themselves to practice on."

Eckhart Tolle (1948 ) author of Power of Now has observed:

"Dogmas — religious, political, scientific— arise out of the erroneous belief that thought can encapsulate reality or the truth. Dogmas are collective conceptual prisons. And the strange thing is that people love their prison cells because they give them a sense of security and a false sense of “I know.”

Nothing has inflicted more suffering on humanity than its dogmas. It is true that every dogma crumbles sooner or later, because reality will eventually disclose its falseness; however, unless the basic delusion of it is seen for what it is, it will be replaced by others. What is this basic delusion? Identification with thought."

The Great Cover up in Indian Media

The Duplicity of English Language Media

"Of course the real cover-up is not in the US or Germany but here in India . Our Nehruvian secular press will not touch a pedophile priest or nun raper with a barge pole. They cannot because they and the electronic media are either Christian owned or Christian controlled or Christian something. We will never know exactly. Either about the media or what goes on in all those Christian orphanages and boarding schools. The media does not look and we don’t want to see. It is a conspiracy of convenience. Unfortunately there is the Internet and international TV channels, so we get informed anyway. But so long as the scandals stay in the US and Europe we are safe. Mass Conversions in India – Destroying Cultures and Families

If this is not an act of complete manipulation that what is?

Toronto, Canada - Why are so many religious conversions in India going unnoticed?  The majority of the population there is quick to point out that “Hindu Fundamentalists have done….,” or that “The BJP, Hindu Nationalist Party is fanatical,” when such parties bring to attention the problem of forced conversions in the country.  All citizens of India who are influenced by giant media sources such as NDTV and IBN easily point out the “Hindu fanatics,” but fail to see the growing existence of Christian missionaries throughout the so called secular country.

Refer to I will arrest the Pope says Richard Dawkins - timesonline.co.uk

Christian missionaries come in huge numbers to India , most of who are from the Southern states of the United States .  They enter the country with claims of humanitarian-secular acts to help with compassion, the disadvantaged, poverty-stricken population of India However, when examined closely, out of their “compassionate acts” emerge thousands and thousands of new converted Christians.  The disadvantaged populations of India are manipulated and taken advantage of by means of financial support and food as well as guidance towards Jesus through gradual force.

Refer to Christianisation of Chennai Doordarshan's Channel - By Thamizhchelvan - vijayvaani.com

If this is not an act of complete manipulation that what is?  Why is the Indian government allowing such organizations into the country in the first place, especially when their agenda is so clear?  In addition, when a Hindu soul decides to do something about such conniving acts, why is it printed as a first page story on a national news media source titled something in the line of “Hindutva Group Hindering Freedom.”?  As in other countries such as Pakistan or Bangladesh with Muslim majorities, who sustain and fight for their religion, why can’t Hindus do the same for their countries religion without getting criticism from fellow Hindus?  How has a country’s majority, including the government become so blind to such appalling act’s that hinder and take advantage of religious freedom? No one should be forced into following a religion they do not wish to follow.  Instead, in India , thousands and thousands are baptized in masses.  There is literally a mass production of Christians in India , as if they are factory products that need to be relabelled as fast and as efficiently as possible.  Victims are gathered in an area together where a baptizing procession takes place. They line up for the holy bath, quickly poured down on them, and that’s it.  They must now follow the teachings of Jesus.

It is one thing to see such brutal acts but it is another to see it yet do nothing about it.  I as an NRI Indian am truly ashamed to be a part of a country who participates in allowing such amoral acts.

The solution to such a problem can only be devised if Hindus unite and form groups/organizations that fight against conversions in India and help to drive these people out.  It starts first by voting for the party that will support Hindu rights—parties like the BJP.  Such parties are not conservative right winged religion Hindu parties. Even though they have been titled as the Hindu Nationalist party, their views are very liberal and in line with the secular perspective.  However, they strive to protect the rights of the majority of India because they see the risk and threat there is to this majority. If you do not see or face what is claimed in anti-Hindu media, then there is a high chance that the facts are bogus.  Experiences, one’s surroundings and knowledge are key to understand the injustices that the Indian government is currently taking part in, by allowing such missionary groups into India .  The effects need to be examined and we need to be aware of the consequences for India as a country in the future.

And she described it live on a national CBC television broadcast on July 3, 2008.

On a national scale, this protection of perpetrators has been guaranteed by the Canadian government's refusal to bring criminal charges against the churches for their killing of all those children. And the same guilty churches have even helped to choose the "Truth and Reconciliation" commissioners who will pretend to "investigate" the residential schools while promising that no names will be named or wrongdoing reported. This kind of miscarriage of justice is called "healing and reconciliation" in Canada

Cardinal Oswald Gracias was one of the brains behind the designing, printing and releasing of the Indian Bible which contained hundreds of sacred verses usurped from Hindu texts such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Mahabharata and the Bhagwat Gita.

The motive was to cheat the gullible masses and covertly lure them to follow Christianity. At the time of the Indian Bible’s release in June 2008, the Cardinal had stated that this Bible, made in India and for Indians, would bring the word of God closer to millions of people, not only Christians.

Yet the very same Cardinal Oswald Gracias stoutly denied any knowledge about this Indian Bible at the press conference held immediately after the interfaith dialogue on 12 June 2009 in Mumbai. So much for Catholic honesty! Ironically, the Cardinal is a founder patron of the Global Foundation for Civilisational Harmony (GFCH). Even during the interfaith dialogue, the Cardinal and other Catholic leaders, including the representative of the Vatican, denied the ‘inculturation’ charges against them and put the blame on other denominations of Christianity. Their ‘honesty’ regarding the Indian Bible was exposed during the press meet; what follows is an exposure of their honesty regarding inculturation techniques.

Hindu nationalists know and understand the political objectives of the Church and Islam.

"The mission of the Catholic Church to Christianize the world, in the beginning, was effected by weapons that suited the fascist agenda in a world disarmed and subjugated by White Christian colonialism – genocide, war, forcible conversion, separation of children from parents in non-Christian colonized nations when the children were brought up as Christians. Second World War and the ugly truths of Christian roots of Nazism, fascism and colonization made such ruthless methods increasingly untenable and so the Second Vatican Council crafted its modified weapon – inter-faith dialogue.

Now, the Church will not ram the Christian faith down the throats of non-believers by hectoring to them about ‘satan worship, false gods and barbaric, pagan superstitions’ but will approach them respectfully for dialogue and tell them politely that the Catholic Church is the sole repository of truth, Jesus Christ is the only Lord and the Church the only way to salvation. The agenda remains the same – Christianize the world, but the words on the surface will be polite, but the execution of the mission will be just as ruthless and as determined.  Inter-faith dialogue is the weapon of the Catholic Church crafted in the Second Vatican Council for easy penetration, not of societies, but penetration of Hindu and Buddhist religious leaders through access during these dialogues."

Why does Church want to steal Hindu Scriptures from Pagans?

This chapter is in no way anti-Christian but rather anti-conversion. It provides information about the insidious campaign that is taking place to reduce and wipeout Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and other Vedic traditions that are followed by large sections of humanity in India and around the world.

***

After stealing  Hindu Scriptures - it begs the question then why Convert Hindus?
Does end Justify the means?

Rev. Rusty Lee Thomas of Elijah Ministries and Assistant Director of Operation Save America has written in his book, The Kingdom Leadership Institute Manual

"Whether we like it or not, ours is a bloody religion," "Beginning with God slaying the animals to cover Adam and Eve after the fall…to the final sacrifice by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, one theme rings true. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins."

(source: Christian Bootcamp Seeks to Arm Home-Schooled Youths for "Spiritual Warfare" - alternet.org).

It is an open secret that the foremost aim of the Church is to spread Christianity throughout the world and establish its rule. Yet an Indian government led by a ‘Hindu’ party welcomed Pope John Paul II as a State Guest and allowed him to give a clarion call for evangelization of India on this sacred Hindu Bhumi.

Christian people taking advise from the Pope John Paul II, are devising various ways of deceiving illiterate Hindus for conversion by all kinds of tricks they can think of. They have got no shame in borrowing and copying from various Hindu scriptures without even mentioning or acknowledging it. If Christians are to borrow so much from Hindus, then why not allow Hindus stay as Hindus without their conversion.

For influencing uneducated Hindu masses, Christians have started showing Virgin Mother in a sari having bindi on her forehead and Joseph donning a turban. For Christians Mother may be virgin, but scientifically it has not been proved that a woman can stay virgin and produce a child more so in olden days. It is one of the tools of befooling people. Other tool is that Jesus died due to sins of other people as if other people have lived for ever by transferring their sins to Jesus or if the other people have not done any sin then he would have lived for ever. In the whole world there is no country or system where somebody commits crime and some one else gets the punishment. Even if a relative of a person who has committed crime, wants to go punishment in stead of the person who committed crime, even then no court would allow it. Always a person who commits crime gets the punishment. But Christians to make masses guilty conscious, keep repeating that Jesus died due to the sins of all the Christians of the world.

In one tribal area, no body ever committed any crime. But when Christians went to that tribal area for the conversion purposes, Christian preachers keep repeating the same saying that Jesus died due to their sins. All the people were surprising that when Jesus died they were even not born, then how come Jesus died for their sins. Then from where those sins came? Anyhow Christian preachers were able to convert all the tribal people to Christianity. After conversion there was lots of crime in that tribal area, as most of the people thought that all the sins due to their crimes would be transferred to Jesus. Christians not only commit crime, but even transfer ordinary simple people into criminals.

In fact if Christians are to borrow and copy so much Hindu traditions and from Hindu religious books then they should convert themselves to Hinduism from Christianity.
For Christians "Conversion is a human right," ?

Christians say "We cannot refuse to others our beautiful way of life."

Refer to The Goa Inquisition, The Holocaust, The Crusades, European Imperialism, Salem Witchhunt, Slavery in America....

Hindus have already beautiful life so they should allow to stay poor and illiterate Hindus as Hindus. If for Christians "Conversion is a human right," then reconversion for converted Hindus is the right of Hindus as well into their fold. But in that case all Christian countries of the world make a very big hue and cry when Christians are converted into Hinduism. When Hindus are converted into Christianity or Islam, then no body or Bhaaratiya media make any kind of hue and cry.

Drivers in New Delhi tell stories of missionaries coming to their villages with free textbooks and medicines. But after a while, there was a catch: some missionaries would continue their good works only if locals agreed to convert.

There are more recent examples of Christian shenanigans in India, which years ago banned foreign missionaries.

A Canadian trade official recently scheduled a meeting with someone he thought was an executive from a U.S.-based food and beverage company. "We sat down to lunch and I had this guy's card and wanted to talk business," the trade official said. "He said to me, `You know I'm not really here as an executive, right? I'm a missionary.'"

“Christianity is the most ridiculous, the most absurd, and bloody religion that has ever infected the world”

                              - said Voltaire, Letters of Voltaire and Frederick the Great of Prussia .

"Christianity has been the curse of all cultures into which it has intruded."

                                   -  Vine Deloria Jr. American Indian author of the book, Red Earth: White Lies

"During the four centuries spanning the time between 1492, when Christopher Columbus first set foot on the "New World" and 1892, when the US Census Bureau concluded that there were fewer than a quarter million indigenous people surviving within the country's claimed boundaries, a hemisphere population estimated to have been as great as 125 million was reduced by something over 90 percent.  The people had died in their millions of being hacked apart with axes and words, burned alive and trampled under horses, hunted as game and fed to dogs, shot, beaten, stabbed, scalped for bounty, hanged on meathooks and thrown over the side of ships at sea, worked to death as slave laborers, intentionally starved and frozen to death during multitude of forced marches and internments, and, in an unknown number of instances deliberately infested with epidemic diseases. Thus occurred what even dishonest commentators have acknowledged as being "very probably the greatest demographic disaster in history."

"I call Christianity the one great curse, the one great intrinsic depravity, the one great instinct for revenge for which no expedient is sufficiently poisonous, secret, subterranean, petty-I call it the one mortal blemish of mankind.  In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point."

Church's Theocratic ideal: Conquest of all global souls

Only One God, one King, one Pope ?

Flawed Reasoning? So what happens to people who lived thousands of years before the birth of Christ? Did they not receive salvation from God?

Catholic Church’s nefarious designs

After planting the cross, constructing the prayer house and placing the statues of Jesus and Mary with the full connivance of government authorities, the Christians indulged in a heavy harvest of souls in and around the villages near the hillock. They have already converted 40% of the local populace by fraudulent means.

They have organised “Hindu” rituals (inculturation techniques) like lighting lamps (instead of candles), incense sticks (agarbati) and performing of ‘Archana’ inside the prayer house. They stop the devotees of Melmaruvathur Adi Parasakthi Temple midway and force them to visit the prayer house by saying that the same “Adi Parasakthi” of Melmaruvathur is blessing devotees here on the hillock in the form of “Mary Amman.”

Similar to the “Girivalam” of Tiruvannamalai hills, the padres here have arranged for “Girivalam” (circumambulation around the hillock) during full moon (Purnima) days. A large section of the ignorant and innocent masses who visit Melmaruvathur have started visiting this hillock on their way to and from Melmaruvathur. As the inflow of ‘devotees’ increases day by day, Christians have started collecting money from them for the construction of the new Church.

Christians in India - Take land: a mere 2.32 per cent of the population owns land disproportionate to its numbers and needs. The churches are acquiring more and more land and building more and more churches, while proclaiming that they serve the poor. It is a fraud to project a picture of the SC and ST acquiring self-confidence and self-respect once they get converted to Christianity. The Dalits continue to be assigned menial tasks, continue to live separately in villages and even after death are buried in separate in places demarcated for them. For half a century the churches in India insulated themselves and observed silence when the Dalits were massacred and burned, children dehumanised and women subjugated and marginalised by Personal Laws. Now when their vested interests are questioned, the churches are aroused and they point to the aberrations, which any larger society will encounter, as fit enough to raise a hue and cry nationally and internationally. World history in general and the church history in particular are replete with instances of the betrayal of Christ and His message.

Forcing Christianity down Pagan throats?

Piously Destroying Hinduism

Missionary aim is to uproot and destroy Hinduism and Hindu Culture and replace it with menacing monolithic intolerance

"Truth is One, the wise call It by many names." - Rig Veda.

"Religious intolerance was inevitably born with the belief in one God." - Sigmund Freud

"There seems to be an abundance of shirtsleeve Christians who preach that the only way to get eternal life after death is by believing in Jesus. In fact, these zealots say that you will burn in hell if you don’t believe in Jesus. My impression is that cultural hardliners—such as those who wish to impose one religion on all of America —are often struggling with some kind of personal insecurity, are politically or financially motivated, or are just confused or manipulated. I see cultural and religious diversity as a strength. If more Americans are turning to Hinduism, maybe it’s a good thing: The Hindus I’ve met are all very kind, humble and polite people. By Brad Pfeiffer Heber Springs , Arkansas - suntimes.com

Why are the Western countries so keen on shoving 'an intolerant and a born in blood' Christianity down pagan throats of India?

“So far as one can understand the present Christian effort, it is to uproot Hinduism from its very foundation and replace it with another faith.” - Mahatma Gandhi.

"The conversion of "pagans" had been the first objective of the Society of Jesus' founder. Their theocratic ideal: to bring the world under the Holy See's authority, required that they should go into all the regions of the globe, in the conquest of souls. The missionaries of the Society of Jesus found the New World much more favorable to their proselytism than Asia. There, they found no old and learned civilisations, no religions solidly established, nor any philosophical traditions, but only poor and barbarian tribes, unarmed spiritually as well as temporally before the white conquerors. Only Mexico and Peru, with the memory of Aztec and Inca gods still fresh in their minds, resisted this imported religion for quite a long time."

That narrow absurdity prances about as the one true religion which all must accept on peril of persecution by men here and spiritual rejection or fierce eternal punishment by God in other worlds. This grotesque creation of human unreason, the parent of so much intolerance, cruelty, obscurantism and aggressive fanaticism, have never been able to take firm hold of the free and supple mind of India".

Christian elitism

"Part of the Christian package is the assertion that believers are special people, while unbelievers are subjects for the wrath of God. Their belief system makes them the elitists! They have their mansion waiting for them on streets made of gold when they get to heaven. They’re the enlightened ones to understand the truths of scripture that is denied to us “heathen”.  This is all within the Christian fantasy mindset, but let us take a casual look at the reality! This elitism of Christianity is a dangerous fantasy. This egalitarian assumption is a myth, just like their religion is.  So where does that leave Christianity?" Blood soaked History of the Church

The Genocide of The Cathars

The Cathars rejected  the suffering on the cross, the  Roman Church was in  their eyes the church of Satan.   They believed that Jesus was neither God nor man   –  Rex Mundi.

"Tolerance, today considered a virtuous trait, was a dirty word in medieval Europe. This was particularly true of Christian belief, which developed into a straight and narrow path from which it was dangerous, and frequently fatal, to stray. 13th century pope, Innocent II, actually made it a crime to tolerate the presence of heretics in a community. This unbending frame of mind did not arise only from the zealous dogmatism of the medieval Church. It was also a self-defense against the challenge that confronted Christianity at this time. Within the Church, it was felt that the only way to overcome rivals was to treat their beliefs and practices, or indeed, any dissent that cast the smallest doubt on received wisdom, as heresy or the work of the Devil. The punishments incurred were fearful. Burning dissenters at the stake was meant to purify the world of their presence. Torture was designed to force out the demon possessing an individual and thereby save the victim's immortal soul.

Crimes of Christianity

G W (George William) Foote & J M (Joseph Mazzini) Wheeler  in Crimes of Christianity chapter IX - The Crusades and Preface:

"The Crusaders were also granted a plenary indulgence from sin by the Pope; and at the voice of their pastor, the robber, the incendiary, the homicide, arose by thousands to redeem their souls by repeating on the infidels the same deeds which they had exercised against their Christian brethren. They also enjoyed temporal privileges."

“The merits and services of Christianity have been industriously extolled by its hired advocates. Every Sunday its praises are sounded from myriads of pulpits. It enjoys the prestige of an ancient establishment and the comprehensive support of the State. It has the ear of rulers and the control of education. Every generation is suborned in its favor. Those who dissent from it are losers, those who oppose it are ostracised; while in the past, for century after century, it has replied to criticism with imprisonment, and to scepticism with the dungeon and the stake. By such means it has induced a general tendency to allow its pretensions without inquiry and its beneficence without proof. ”

The Grand Inquisitor's Manual - A scathing account of the Inquisition’s 600-year campaign to stifle religious dissent in the Catholic Church

Jonathan Kirsch (?) is a Biblical scholar, an attorney, and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He is a bestselling author of books on religion, the Bible, and Judaism.

"The inquisitorial apparatus that was first invented in the Middle Ages remained in operation for the next six-hundred years, and it has never been wholly dismantled. As we shall see, an unbroken thread links the friar-inquisitors who set up the rack and the pyre in southern France in the early thirteenth century to the torturers and executioners of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia in the mid-twentieth century. Nor does the thread stop at Auschwitz or the Gulag; it can be traced through the Salem witch trials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, the Hollywood blacklists of the McCarthy era, and even the interrogation cells at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo."

The twelfth century birthed a new and sinister brand of sanctioned terror, an international network of secret police and courts, an army of inquisitors whose sworn duty was to seek out anyone regarded as an enemy, and a casualty list numbering in the tens of thousands. The original agents of the Inquisition—priests and monks, scribes and notaries, attorneys and accountants, torturers and executioners—were deputized by the Church and their worst excesses were excused as the pardonable sins of soldiers engaged in a holy war against heresy that became the obsession of Christendom. Yet the first rumblings of Western civilization's great engine of persecution provided no indication of the ultimate scope and influence of the inquisitorial toolkit and how the crimes of the first inquisitors were perpetrated again and again into the twentieth century and beyond."

Saint Joseph once preached,

"He who has bathed in Christ has no need for a second bath."

Early Christians took this literally and never bathed. Benedict was an odd monk that spent most of his life in rags, rarely eating, and speaking only in awkward outcries. He was canonized for saving monasticism in the 8th century, through which he spread the idea that bathing was a vanity that facilitated sins of the flesh. This meme stuck with Christians until the 18th century.

A Dogmatic Geography

Daniel J Boorstin (1914 - 2004) was an American historian, professor, attorney, and writer. He was appointed twelfth Librarian of the United States Congress from 1975 until 1987.

The Prison of Christian Dogma

"Christian Europe did not carry on the work of Ptolemy. Instead the leaders of orthodox Christendom built a grand barrier against the progress of knowledge about the earth. Christian geographers in the Middle Ages spent their energies embroidering a neat, theologically appealing picture of what was already known, or was supposed to be known.

Geography had no place in the medieval catalogue of the “seven liberal arts.” For a thousand years of the Middle Ages no common synonym for “geography” was in ordinary usage, and the word did not enter the English language until the mid-16h century. Lacking the dignity of a proper discipline, geography was an orphan in the world of learning. The subject became a ragbag filled with odds and ends of knowledge and pseudo-knowledge, of Biblical dogma, travelers’ tales, philosophers’ speculations, and mythical imaginings.

After the death of Ptolemy, Christianity conquered the Roman Empire and most of Europe. Then we observe a Europe-wide phenomenon of scholarly amnesia, which afflicted the continent from AD 300 to at least 1300. During those centuries Christian faith and dogma suppressed the useful image of the world that had been so slowly, so painfully, and so scrupulously drawn by ancient geographers. Christian dogma and Biblical lore imposed other figments of the theological imagination on the map of the world. The maps themselves became guides to the Article of Faith. Every episode and very place mentioned in Scripture required a location and became a tempting arena for Christian geographers. "

Conversion to Intolerance

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) A razor-sharp comment of in his book Marriage and Morals:

"The Christian view that all intercourse outside marriage is immoral was, as we see in the passages from St Paul , based upon the view that all sexual intercourse, even within marriage, is regrettable. A view of this sort, which goes against biological facts, can only be regarded by sane people as morbid aberration. The fact that it is embedded in Christian ethics has made Christianity throughout its whole history a force tending towards mental disorders and unwholesome views of life'."

The medieval satirist and father of prose fiction, Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 - 1375) wrote his tales of sexual irreverence and the clergy's hypocrisy for Decameron in 1348, with an impish impudence. He was a believer in the supremacy of natural laws and got inspired by tales of Panchatantra from India , written around 500AD, who had traveled west via Greece in the 1200s. I think Western theology is a compartmental conundrum; it conjures in me visions of decrepit old men sitting in musty old rooms and cellars, disconnected from reality and humanity, creating doctrines to arrest our natural freedoms and render progressive ideas as diabolical paradigms. "Devils reside in the details of these teachings" was etched in a dungeon around 380AD, near Ostia by an anonymous prisoner.

Similarly when I look at those magnificent churches built on the shoulders of apostates, non-believers, and slaves, all the grandiose visions of Christian history washes off in regret and disdain.

Many intellectuals, historians, and academic scholars have argued that in Christianity the balance tips more towards destruction of cultures than that of achievements across the globe. The Dark Ages had left many paradigmatic and prescient ideas in the dungeons of fear. Again, the willful protagonists of subversive conversions, in the aftermath of the tragedy of the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami are the Christians, going around people inundated in sorrow, on the southern beaches of India, and giving them money and asking them to convert so they can be saved and finally be at peace. There were protests by Christians itself upon witnessing the base missionary activities.

Why is this conditional largesse being claimed as Christian grandeur?

The battles for converts alone had been responsible for saturating the land of Sinai and near west and east with blood of millions in the process. Live and let live is a spiritually unfathomable concept for such rabid ideologies. Christians throughout history went into remote regions of the world to conquer and convert indigenous cultures, civilizations even eviscerating some, like the Aztecs. In their self-righteousness and misguided hubris, the Christian hypocrisy has freely dispensed the appellations of "savages", barbaric", "uncivilized" to almost every culture they had encountered, yet if you looked at their "righteous" record and behavior through the ages, it would become manifestly evident as to who actually were the savages and barbarians. The presumption of superiority in "one truth" faiths and their subversive politics with intolerance is the very essence of inferiority and insecurity.

Voluntary conversion meant abandoning your own identity and history. And forced conversion meant destruction of identity, indigenous cultures, traditions, lore and history of the converted at the point of sword or money, leaving people without any sense of roots or belonging, only existing in the present as rabid mechanisms of propagation. I also find the door-to-door Jehovah sellers similar to the Fuller Brush salesmen in the 1950s and '60s. Look at what the Native American Indians have been reduced to. Today they mostly live on reservations that are no more than Casinos with gambling and flowing alcohol, with no identity and a dissolved past, thanks to the conversions.

"Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." -1 Samuel 15:3 This is from the Bible, which sounds like some merciless gangster two thousand years ago, and here is Sri Ramakrishna from the 19th century whose reasoning renders the heavily sold faiths like immature kids fighting over a toy, which is actually you: This metaphysical and spiritual sage says:

"There is large round lake with three distinct flights of stairs leading to the water. The Hindus draw water from the lake and call it 'Jal,' the Muslims draw and carry their water from a different point on the lake in leather bags and call it 'Pani' and the Christians get their water from another end of the same lake in a Chalice and call it 'water.' Everyone wants the same substance, but give it different names...only the climate, temperament, and names create these differences. Why not let each man follow his own path?"

After 26 years as a nun, Jesme Raphael gave up her robes and walked out of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel, the Catholic order in Kerala , India , that had been her home for three decades. Two years later, Raphael, now 53, has come out with her memoirs, Amen: An Autobiography of a Nun, cataloging lurid details of bullying, sexual abuse and homosexuality in the oldest Catholic women's order in the idyllic coastal state in southern India . Shocking as it is, the book is only the latest in a long series of accusations and scandals afflicting the Catholic Church in the state with the largest population of Christians in India.

Since the book's release on Jan. 30, publishers DC Books have already sold all 3,000 copies, and a reprint has been ordered. The Catholic Church is miffed. "There is no dearth of antireligion people in Kerala society," said Stephen Alathara, deputy secretary of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council. There has been no shortage of them in recent months. On Feb. 11, Sister Josephine, a nun in the Daughters of Mary congregation in Trivandrum , Kerala's state capital, was found dead in her room in an apparent suicide. Members of the congregation said the 38-year-old nun had been under treatment for depression. After news of the incident spread, a crowd gathered around the house and shouted slogans alleging that harassment had led Sister Josephine to kill herself. The police had to intervene, and an inquiry into the case was later ordered. Six months earlier, on Aug. 11 of last year, 23-year-old Sister Anoopa Mary had been found hanging in her room in St. Mary's Convent in Kollam, north of the capital. In what was purportedly her suicide note, she had said she could no longer withstand the senior nuns' harassment. Her father, a cook in the local bishop's house, charged that sexual exploitation had led his daughter to take her life. The convent has denied the allegations, though a court investigation is still ongoing.

Refer to Nuns die virgins - The Roman Catholic Church has suffered adverse publicity worldwide over the last few years after sordid tales of sexual abuse perpetrated by priests and bishops were unearthed in the United States and other countries. In March 2002, the international news magazine Newsweek published a report under the headline, Sins of the Fathers” which detailed how priests and bishops in different dioceses of the Catholic Church in the US had molested young boys and girls for about 50 years. The scandal was shocking in that the Catholic Church, which has one billion adherents worldwide, stood accused alongside secular organisations of covering up rape, child molestation and paedophilia.

Hilda Raja's response to Intolerance in Italy

Vine Deloria Jr.  (1933- 2005) was an American Indian author, theologian, historian, and activist. He was the author of the book, Red Earth: White Lies in which he has remarked that:

"Christianity has been the curse of all cultures into which it has intruded. It has offered eternal life somewhere else and produced social and individual disintegration. Catholic priests prey on their parishioners; televangelists engage in fraudulent financial practices or are seen in the seedy parts of town on sexual escapades. Throughout American history we have all suffered because of the European religious heritage. Shortly after the discovery of the Western Hemisphere the Protestant Reformation began, initiating a period of intense religious bigotry and intolerance that crested with the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem witch hunts. Systematic torture of unbelievable pain was visited upon anyone suspected of harboring heretical thoughts. "

Christianity is Roman War Propaganda against the Jews ?

Christianity has been responsible for the systematic erasure of countless cultures across continents and centuries while proclaiming to advance the holy "designs" of the One True and Only God. But, as I will show, Imperialism is not an incidental development to the essentially spiritual teachings of Christianity; In fact, the historical evidence points to the exact opposite phenomenon: that Christianity is really war propaganda masquerading as spirituality and that Christianity is imperialist by structure. We tend to dismiss Imperialism as a constituent property of Christianity only because it has a unique ability to falsely implicate the native victims as the real aggressors, not merely at the level of rhetoric but with all the force of theology and conviction of revisionist history. Many of the Western Categories that are prevalent today (e.g. Secularism, Modernity, Orientalism) are directly derived from Christianity; that is to say, the type of war propaganda represented by Christianity is being replicated in many native societies today under such guises as Liberty and Freedom (think of Bush's war in Iraq). Any native who raises objections immediately gets branded as communal, retrograde, refractory, and regressive, just as the ancients were vilified as "unsaved" heathens by the believers of the One True God. Lastly, after all the demonization, iconoclasm, and deculturation of native societies, a "filler" identity (pagan, heathen, black, Hindu) is installed in place of the assaulted native identity.

Bible has ceased to mean that much in the modern world. Christians would do themselves a huge favor by disavowing the insipid notion that a Jew born in Nazareth is our collective savior. Get rid of the Bible. It is outdated. Christ had important things to say, but he was not a God, there is no 'Father' who is going to save you, and there is no Heaven and no Hell. Only reality and your life.

Japanese shoguns and Jesuits

“The greatness of Christianity did not lie in attempted negotiations for compromise with any similar philosophical opinions in the ancient world, but in its inexorable fanaticism in preaching and fighting for its own doctrine.”

                       -  Adolph Hitler

The Tokugawa shoguns who ruled Japan after 1600 knew their history for they had seen what happened in Philippines: first came the missionaries, then the army. There was also the question of loyalty. When someone became a Christian, the Tokugawa wondered, were the converts loyal to Tokugawa or the priests.? Realizing that the Jesuits would undermine Japan , the Tokugawa asked Jesuits to leave. Being Japanese and Christian was outlawed and Christians were asked to convert back to Buddhism. Even Jesuit priests were made to convert and forced  to take an oath declaring Christianity was evil. For couple of centuries the Japan was free of missionaries. But they came back again, in the 19th century.

An Imperialistic and Intolerant Dogma?

Henry Charles Lea (1825 – 1909) is to the Inquisition what Edward Gibbon is to the Roman Empire , a self-invented historian who was also a gifted phrasemaker and relentless polemicist. The scion of a Quaker publishing family from Philadelphia , Lea set himself to work on a definitive study of the Inquisition.  He wrote several books including History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages.

“Fanatic zeal, arbitrary cruelty, and insatiable cupidity rivaled each other in building up a system unspeakably atrocious,” writes Henry Charles Lea  in summing up the verdict of history on the Inquisition, “It was a standing mockery of justice – perhaps the most iniquitous that the arbitrary cruelty of man has ever devised.” “When the Inquisition once laid hands upon a man, it never released its hold,” writes Lea. “The Inquisition had a long arm, a sleepless memory, and we can well understand the mysterious terror inspired by the secrecy of its operations and its almost supernatural vigilance.”

Jonathan Kirsch ( ) is a Biblical scholar, an attorney, and columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He is a bestselling author of books on religion, the Bible, and Judaism.

"The Bogomils were an outgrowth of Christianity, but they rejected the authority of the church under whose jurisdiction they lived, that is, the Eastern Orthodox Church. Like it s counterpoint in the West, the Orthodox Church in eastern Christendom condemned all religious dissidents as heretics, and the Bogomils were accused of various atrocities and outrages by the persecutors. One Christian monk who had secretly embraced Bogomilism was said to have installed (and used) a latrine behind the altar of a Church in order to symbolize his contempt for its corruption and carnality.

And, like almost every other persecuted faith, the Bogomils were said to engage in the sex orgies and rituals of infanticide and cannibalism that had once been charged by the Romans against the first Christians. The Bogomils did no such thing, of course, and their only real offense was their rejection of the official theology of the Orthodox church. They became the victims of extermination of heretics of the Inquisition."

Can you change the leopard’s spots? The denial of permission to hold the Durga Puja last year and again this year by the authorities in Italy should not come as a shock.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the Pope gave a call to redouble missionary activities. Towards what--to bring all people to One faith. A Sunday marked out as Mission Sunday when every church throughout the world the ‘flock’ is reminded of its mission. Through prayer, supplications, preaching and asking for generous giving, it is revitalization of thought, reaffirmation of resolve and realigning of forces to march forward.

Planting the Cross in India is on the top of the agenda of Vatican . The European countries put on a specially tinted spectacle when they view India . That almost 3/4th of its population are lapsed Christians is by no means a deterrent for it to proselytize India . The issue raised by them frequently is that religious freedom is violated in India . When this is stated one has to keep in mind what they mean is that Christians are not been given a free hand to proselytize. Any obstacle to this is cited as violation of religious freedom.

Just a few weeks ago the Ganesh pandals were desecrated and demolished--Pakistani flag hoisted on a police van in Miraj, Marastra, is no concern of anybody. Hindus can be persecuted and their gods and goddesses demolished. This is the right of the Christian / Muslim community because their books prescribe and ordain this dictum. Hindus have no such compulsion and do not believe (as the Pope does) that there is only one single path and only one single Way. ‘I am the Way and the Life’. Literally translated by the church and hence it feels compelled to bulldoze all other religions to pave this One way and one Path.

In reference to ‘In Rome, Durga is not welcome’ by Kanchan Gupta and the whole narration of how the organizers were humiliated, harassed and hounded leading to the cancellation of the puja but for the timely intervention of our ambassador Mr Arif Shahid Khan makes no shocking news.

It is to be expected if one understands the core and the very faith premise of Christianity. To understand this one should have at least a cursory view of the history of Christianity and its very ‘faith’ belief. It was born in blood. It is an imperialistic expansionist doctrine. It has very little to do with spirituality and still less to do with the search for Truth. Christianity’s goal is to Christianize the world. If one comprehends these benchmarks then one will be able to understand the doctrine--which is based on a linear path. No compromise and no acceptance of other faiths.

‘Go ye and baptize all nations in the Name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Ghost’. This is the injunction. The duty of the institutional church/churches and the ‘flock’ is clear-their duty to follow this command given by God. What about then of all the education institutions, the hospitals, the good work organizations, et al they are to give the human face and the softer face of this expansionist doctrine?

This imperialistic religion needs to recruit armies, keep them employed and in a process of reaffirming their duty and their mission. These various organizations serve the purpose well. These organizations/institutions also have a double edge they become the PR machinery--and the public support is easily garnered. This makes it difficult to expose the imperial face of Christianity. The Christian organizations control much of the media in the developing countries. Hence a humanitarian Christianity is being projected. That its history and growth was through a route that was bloody and ruthless – with religious wars, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the witch burning at the stakes – all in the name of this one God which it upholds and this one faith which it need to propagate--Today it conveniently depicts a humanitarian, compassionate, good Samaritan face.

If it was the bloodletting which justified the growth and the march of Christianity then, today it has changed gears with the evangelists preying among the poor like vultures- mouthing promises and performing miracles. Keeping the people in a trance--fed with the opium, drugged with a kind of hysterical brainwashing and leading them on with false promises--with threat of punishment if they do not denounce the religion in which they are born--and accept the one God to gain a ticket to heaven--along with other perks--this is the business of proselytization. All this comes under ‘religious freedom’, according to the European countries and Rome. A call to ban such a business of proselytization is opposed by our secular UPA government because it has its own agenda in the process of proselytization--vote bank politics.

Inter-faith dialogue is only modified weapon of mass destruction

The doctrine of Christianity does not give space for dialogue. Then why this great dialogue simulation? That too has its PR and business dimensions. To give the impression that the church is willing to learn and to grow--to accept that other faiths as god-centered and lead to salvation. This will generate tremendous goodwill among the ‘secular’ elite. That is part of the sheen given to tolerance and to a semblance of search for the truth. All involved in such an activity cannot be painted black with the same brush. Many are innocently drawn towards this ‘sharing’ because they firmly believe that they need to give what they have--in the process if they pick up a few grains well and good. They can use those as quotes for furthering again their incursions. If the search for the truth was real and genuine then it makes sense to have dialogue. But brainwashed and imbibed with a crusading fervor the Christians embark on a conquering march--conquer souls and along with it land, economic and political power.

It is against this background that one should understand the question, ‘Where are the millions of Mother Theresa’? How does one fit in the teaching of Jesus that one cannot serve two Masters--God and Mammon? To this the reply is ‘one should be pragmatic and not take things literally’. In the name of God everything is justified. It has another aim--it keeps the hungry, the assetless and powerless ‘flock’ vision glued to beyond the horizons of today to the green pastures in the next world.

The aim ‘to plant the Cross in India’ must not be forgotten. While the Church is unable to keep its ‘flock’ in Europe within its bounds and where the shepherd’s voice is unrecognized by the sheep the Church’s attention and all energies are directed to Asia--especially India . Conversion and mission activity is the oxygen which keeps the church pulsating in its expansionist march.

Just a couple of Sundays ago the church celebrated the Mission Sunday and the Pope’s appeal was again to convert--to bring all under Christ. Why such a appeal, because the ‘faithful’ believe that it has the one and only faith--the and that it is their duty to share this ‘Good News’ and it is their duty to save humanity from falling into the depths of hell. Towards this all means should be employed. So the business of the church is well anchored. For this finance, global corporate starting from foot soldiers to a network of organizations knitting the whole globe has been well structured and put in place. The church is the best salesman/PR with its media.

Its firm grip on the media on what to disseminate makes it easy for the ‘flock’ to be controlled with the ‘right’ information. Even prayers to be printed, distributed and accepted to be recited by the ‘flock’ needs the ‘imprimatur’ or the Okaying seal of Rome . The Pentecostal churches by setting out the crusading armies in the form of evangelists in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu have lured the vulnerable people by promises of the ‘green pastures’.

The European countries and Vatican allege that Christians are persecuted and Religious Freedom is denied which is a fake allegation and far from truth. Culling out news reports controlled and owned by the Christian media is nothing but propaganda. The NGOs and the evangelical churches abet this reporting because they stand to gain. To attract the big money that pours in, it is necessary to keep up the tempo of persecution and the mirage of a persecuted church and denial of religious freedom in India as reality. Does it make sense for Italy to deny Durga Puja celebrations on the basis of this fake allegation?

Will Italian Catholic Madame Sonia Gandhi take up this issue of Hindu Human rights violation in her own country?

Sonia Gandhi and Annie Besant

Besant lost her heart and sublimed her soul to: India. A friend of Swami Vivekananda, Mrs. Besant was trying to lead Indians back to their own gods and arouse their sense of self-respect and pride in the greatness of Hinduism.

The UPA government with Mrs Sonia Gandhi is there very vigorously carrying out the Christianization in the political power echelons. The UPA government’s unprecedented step of inviting the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (UNCIRF) to visit Gujarat and Orissa is not only disturbing, but also portents greater harm to the harmony and unity of the country.

It is entirely another matter that Hindu pundits were killed, driven out of their homes and are in refugee camps--does this indicate a persecution of the Christians or a persecution of the Hindus in their own motherland? Has this been a concern of any one of the European countries? Christianizing India is not just for God but for mammon too because it a big money spinning business involving billions. Hence there is vested interest.

The litmus test is –ban all foreign funds flowing into this country to the various churches and NGOs, immediately, you’ll perceive this crusading spirit evaporating. It will be right for the EU and Rome to watch out the violations and persecution of the minorities in other countries and not chase a shadow in India . This has an ulterior motive. The UPA government with Mrs Sonia Gandhi is there very vigorously carrying out the Christianization in the political power echelons.

Narkasura is dead?

The Sainted Samuel Reddy's Financial assets

Former Chrisian CM of Andhra Pradesh

With YSR’s advent in 2004, evangelical activities increased alarmingly and mass conversions were witnessed in rural areas on a large scale. His open pandering to Church and missionaries emboldened evangelists to go all out in their conversion activities. They dared focus on Hindu pilgrimage sites such as Badrachalam, Simmachalam, Srisailam, Ahobilam, Mangalagiri, Kalahasthi, and didn’t spare Thirumala-Thirupathi!

YSR aided the Church and missionaries in many ways. Thousands of Churches have been planted by missionaries throughout the state totally disproportionate to the Christian population - one Church for every seven Christians! The number of Churches stands at 148,000; the temples are 190,000 (one for every 350 Hindus) and Mosques figure at 176,000 (one for every 40 Muslims). The pastors of the planted Churches straightaway started their ‘harvests’ particularly in rural areas, where mass conversions have been rampant for the last five years. While the government figure of Christian population is 1.5% (2001 census), the Church itself puts the figure at 10 to 12%, which could certainly be more in view of the large scale conversion in the state. Most converts are Scheduled Castes who pretend to be Hindus to enjoy reservation benefits, while they practice Christianity at home. The AP Assembly passed a resolution for SC status for Christian and Muslim SC converts.

Inter-faith dialogue is only modified weapon of mass destruction

Pope Pius IX (1792 –1878) convened the First Vatican Council in 1869, which decreed Papal infallibility in questions of moral and how to understand the scriptures.

He denied equal rights to all religions as ‘the greatest insult imaginable to the one true Catholic faith’.

Hindu nationalists know and understand the political objectives of the Church and Islam.

The Christian church and the Muslim mosque are not sacred places like the Hindu temple. These are places for the faithful to congregate for prayer and politics, while our temples are abodes of the divine; the Divine, in supreme compassion for the bhakta, consents to reside in the structure raised by the bhakta. Hindu temples are therefore the sacred and divine core of Hindu society and all activities of society are governed by the consciousness that the divine is residing in our midst. The village and village temples were therefore self-governing autonomous units linked by a common worldview defined by dharma, karma and the purusharthas to the larger pradesa, desa and rajya.

“Interfaith Dialogue” refers to interaction between two or more religious traditions, at both individual and institutional levels, leading to understanding of values and respecting them, resulting in prevalence of communal amity.

Hindu Dharma and secularism

Hindus have co-existed with other indigenous creeds (Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs and others) without problems for ages, and the peace and harmony prevailing in this great Hindu land was affected only with the advent of Abrahamic faiths, mainly Islam and Christianity, which oppressed the Hindu majority in various ways.

Despite being at the receiving end for several hundred years, the Hindu majority was magnanimous at the time of independence and addressed minorities with concern while framing the Constitution, and ensured their safety, security and religious freedom. India  even refrained from enacting a ‘Common Civil Code.’ The Hindu majority never treated Christians and Muslims as descendents of ‘invaders,’ but as fellow citizens.

Sanatana Dharma has been the character and culture of this great nation. Hindu culture treats the world as a divine family - Vasudaiva Kutumbakam - and welcomes outsiders as aspects of divinity - Atithi Devo Bhava!

Such exalted concepts make words like ‘secularism’ hollow and redundant in the Hindu ethos. Monotheistic religions have no space for non-believers (in Allah or Mohammed or Yahweh or Jesus). Christianity introduced the concept of secularism in western society in order to end sectarian fratricide; as Hindus have no concept or tradition of such murderous sectarianism, secularism in India can at best be a quality of administration by the state.

But the post-independence state has failed to understand this imported notion of secularism, and hence, far from steering clear of all religion, successive governments have failed even to treat all religions equally.

The privileged minorities

Minorities have been given extra privileges by an extra-solicitous Constituent Assembly. Beginning with Article 14, up to Article 30, they have been granted many freedoms, with the Hindu majority getting a raw deal. This has emboldened the minorities to provoke, hurt and disrespect the Hindu majority, while working to achieve their religious objectives. This has naturally resulted in repeated conflicts.

India has undergone major demographic changes in the 60 years since independence; the ineptness of Congress and other political parties has lost Hindu bhoomi in many states to minorities. All political parties have failed the Hindus, and particularly after the arrival of the foreigner-led UPA at the centre, a Christian agenda is being silently achieved to the detriment of this Hindu nation. Simultaneously, Muslim fundamentalists are being encouraged to wage war (jihad) against the nation.

India  lost huge territory when Pakistan was born, along with the current Bangladesh . Since then, the north-east has been Christianised; Kashmir is in trouble; so is Goa; 50% of Kerala is lost to minorities; large parts of Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have become Islamic; a large portion of Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu have become Christianised.

Churches and missionaries of all denominations have become the second largest land owners in the country - next only to the government - and have been building churches and prayer houses anywhere and everywhere, totally disproportionate to their flock. A similar mushrooming of mosques disproportionate to Muslim population is also cause for concern.

History shows that both Islam and Christianity have been more ‘political’ in nature rather than ‘spiritual;’ they have spread worldwide through invasions and persecutions. India has borne the brunt of both Islam and Christianity through jihad and conversions respectively. Both religions have been successful, thanks to an inept political class and immature people who get carried away by ‘secular’ machinations of the political class and the Machiavellian agenda of the clergy of the Abrahamic faiths.

The unholy nexus between pseudo-secular politicians and minority community leaders, aided and abetted by foreign-funded media houses, has caused immense damage to the character of this Hindu nation. When things go beyond tolerance, the majority reacts spontaneously, as happened in Gujarat, Orissa, Karnataka and Jammu (Amarnath). After such reactions, the Hindu majority reverts to its usual tolerant self, hoping that the minority with which conflict took place would also settle down, but the ‘Marxist-media-minority’ nexus plays ugly ‘victimhood’ games in the international arena, bringing disrepute to the country.

In between, minority community leaders organize so-called interfaith dialogues to create a false picture of reconciliation, and successfully complete the exercise by forcing their pre-conceived ‘resolutions’ on the few ‘secularised’ Hindu leaders, using jugglery of words and making them sign a declaration accepting resolutions advantageous to minorities only.

Roman Catholics vs. other denominations

The Vatican is very clever in conducting such farcical exercises. The prime objective of the Vatican is Christianisation of the whole world. The same was pronounced by Pope John Paul II when he gave a “catholic” call for evangelization of Asia, particularly India , during his visit to the country in November 1999. He had the audacity to give such a call standing on Indian soil, that too, as India ’s state guest! The Vatican has a history of achieving its objectives by creating divisions among local people leading to conflicts, and later through a healing touch by rehabilitation, education and healthcare.

While other Christian denominations are aggressive and overt in their evangelical activities, Roman Catholics are covert and subtle. The Catholic leadership doesn’t restrain the other denominations from indulging in aggressive evangelization, purely for the reason that this differentiation helps them to create concepts like “ethical” and “unethical” conversions, or “forced” and “unforced” (voluntary) conversions.

The Catholic leadership always blames other denominations for “unethical” and “forced” conversions during these so-called interfaith dialogues, in order to convince leaders of other faiths to accept the dangerous concept of “ethical” conversions. It achieved success in one such farcical dialogue at the Vatican in May 2006, where leaders whose names have not been made public in India , went ahead and signed a declaration accepting the resolutions prepared by the Vatican and the World Council of Churches!

There is another motive behind the Vatican ’s interfaith dialogues. That is to indirectly put pressure and restrictions on other denominations which poach its targetted community for harvesting. In this fight for “harvest” between various denominations, one question arises - what is the need for Hindus to agree for such dialogues and why should they participate? Hindus don’t indulge in blasphemy of other faiths, gods, and scriptures; they don’t indulge in conversion activities; they don’t interfere in other religious traditions; they don’t meddle with other faiths. On the contrary, Hindus have been amicable to others and they have been tolerating the propaganda (however provocative) of other religions.

Dhimmitude and disunity

How are they reciprocated? By hacking bodies (jihad) and harvesting souls (conversions)! Much of the so-called tolerance is simply dhimmitude, the result of being beaten up or beaten down for ages. Dhimmitude resulted from Nehruvian secularism and impacted Hindus so much that they cannot see the monster standing gleefully before their eyes; they are still in deep slumber.

Some religious leaders are averse to identifying themselves and their ‘teachings’ as ‘Hindu;’ they are more interested in marketing their wares in a global market, than in spreading dharma among the masses in the remotest hamlets. Some Hindu leaders are so magnanimous (naïve?) that they preach “all faiths are the same”! Faiths and custom-oriented traditional mathams have lost out to personality-oriented and business-oriented ‘cults.’

Indophobia: The Real Elephant in the Living Room

Racism is no longer legal and in many places no longer cool.

India 's role in the Western imagination has been a long and important one. Despite some reverential accounts of Indian civilization in the earliest days of the encounter between Europe and India , the image that has prevailed has not been a nice one, or even a truthful one. The present Indophobia has its origins in colonial Hinduphobia. Fuelled by the crazy stories of missionaries determined to rid the world of heathen Hindus and steeped in the ideologies of the colonizers' civilizing mission, Indophobia infiltrated popular, journalistic, political and academic thought. In the cold war period, some things improved, but in the great conversation of powers that Washington thought it was having, Pakistan would appear to it as a reliable favorite; tough, dependable, monotheistic, and anti-communist. India , on the other hand, was seen as too weak, too Hindu, too vegetarian, precariously past its Must Break Up By Date. At best, or worst, India was seen as "pious," with its Gandhian austerities and Nehruvian Non-Alignment dreams.

But it is the present, the post cold war, post 9/11, post outsourcing nature of Indophobia that we must return to, history in tow. The examples are many. Why is it that some Australians reacted to the beating and killing of Indian students with the odd retort that "this happens in Mumbai"? Why did NPR cheerily lend its audience to one man's claim that he saw an Indian get the Nigerian airline bomber on board? Why does Foreign Policy get to call India "evil" without a drop of concern for how it feels to Indian readers or how dangerous words like this were in the past for the colonized nations? Why does New York Times choose to show agonizing restraint when Pakistani terrorists massacre civilians in Mumbai and run screaming headlines naming the arrest of an "Indian" after Madrid ? Why does Slumdog Millionaire, one of the most exhilarating movies of our time, depict the majority of Indian characters in it as irredeemably cruel and barbaric (not the nice Indian hero with the British accent though, of course not)?

Why did the fictional slur "slumdog" and the image of poverty reportedly figure so often in the Australian attacks? Finally, why does Glenn Beck find the name of a life-giving sacred river similar to the name of a disease? I must admit though that the last case is less depressing because it is Glenn Beck after all and the problem must naturally lie not in the word 'Ganges' but really in his ears or what's (not) between them.

Refer to Haitians are Satanic and Deserve Their Suffering says Pat Robertson and Brit Hume, televangelist, still trying to convert Tiger Woods to Christianity and  Aboriginal leader Tom Calma says Australia has 'inherent racism' and Tasmania - cwo.org.

After a brief decade or so of somewhat unexpected "India Rising" stories, India-bashing is once again becoming fashionable. As a media studies teacher, I always wonder what it means when a particular way of looking at things suddenly becomes prevalent in history. What does it tell us about our times and who we are? In the past Indophobia was part of a colonial and then cold war mindset. Thinking of India as the very embodiment of wretchedness and poverty fit in with the western self-perception of the time. In recent times, things have improved at some levels. Racism is no longer legal and in many places no longer cool. With globalization and the economic success of India and Indians abroad, it is no longer possible to deny to India its talent, labor, and its contribution to the world. All should have been well, at least now. But Indophobia has found new reasons to resurface--and some of these reasons have less to do with India and more to do with where the United States sees itself in the world right now. The world's most powerful nation has been only minimally successful in its wars against its most formidable adversary. It is beset by doubts about the mortality of empires and such. It has swung from gung-ho bombs-away leadership to a low-bow bombs-away leadership.

US body should not interfere in Indian affairs: Shankaracharya

“It was only when I finally undertook to read the Bible through from beginning to end that I perceived that its depiction of the Lord God--whom I had always viewed as the very embodiment of perfection--was actually that of a monstrous, vengeful tyrant, far exceeding in bloodthirstiness and insane savagery the depredations of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Attila the Hun, or any other mass murderer of ancient or modern history.”

A look at their annual report on India in 2008, will show the clear anti Hindu bias of this organisation – something that the UPA would definitely love to politically exploit. It is an insult to ask such an organization to endorse the multicultural, multi-religious and multilingual plural society of which each Indian is proud about.

That is the mark of our civilization that prompted Mark Twain to comment that. " In religion all other countries are paupers; India is the only millionaire…”

In 2009 they have enlisted thirteen “countries of particular concern” or CPC, where according to them, violations of religious freedom are the greatest. These include: Burma, China, North Korea , Eritrea , Iran , Iraq , Nigeria , Pakistan , Saudi Arabia , Sudan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan and Vietnam – likely countries where missionary evangelism would have faced the strongest oppositions.

The only people who would be elated at their intrusion would be those Christian groups  in India who were earlier disappointed with USCIRF’s failure to recommend India as CPC.

The USCIRF should do a justice to mankind if they spend their effort and money on research on the topic of the historical atrocities that the Christians and the Churches had committed on the religious freedom of the Native Americans, The Australian Aborigines, The South American Incas and Mayans and the African people, to name a few…

Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati on Friday vehemently opposed the impending visit of United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to India , by saying that it was nothing but “an intrusive mechanism of a foreign Government to interfere in the internal affairs of this country”.

“Though the Indian Government has permitted USCIRF for sending its delegation to this country to hold meetings with our people to ascertain religious freedom in our country, the delegation should actually not be allowed to enter this country on this intrusive mission. We will not allow external interference into our internal affairs,” the Shankaracharya said. The Shankaracharya was interacting with the media persons after initiating the inter-faith dialogue with Christian leaders, including a cardinal from Vatican City in Rome , Jean Louis P Tauran and Cardinal Oswald Gracias from Mumbai.

The truth is that religion is the bedrock of identity, and religion always expresses itself in culture

An Anti-Hindu bias of United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF)

The Shankaracharya also advised the churches in India against using Hindu religious words, phrases and symbols like Veda, Agama, Rishi, Ashrama and Om , as an “inculturation” tactic to deceive vulnerable sections of people targeted for religious conversion.

In a significant statement, the seer from the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt voiced his opposition to “forceful conversion” by any religion. “It has become easy for the missionaries to convert Hindus. All Hindu organisations and associations should work together to educate Hindus and eradicate conversion activity. We have conveyed this message to Christian leaders in the meeting,” the Shankaracharya said.

The Shankaracharya also exhorted the Churches and Christian groups to utilise the funds received by them from abroad for social causes and not for religious conversions.

“We know that very large amounts of money come into this country for Churches and Christian groups, ostensibly for charitable work. These funds should be used only for social causes like health, education etc and should not be used for religious conversion. The Christian organisations should also distribute the funds received from abroad among various charitable institutions irrespective of their religious faith,” the Shankaracharya said.

The Shankaracharya went on to add: “… the Hindu dharma and the Hindus welcome Christians, Muslims, Parsis and Jews to make this land their home. We expect that these religions will not seek to destroy our faith, religion and wound the religious sensibilities. We encourage all religions to live with mutual respect and harmony and in a shared sense of nationalism which should bind us all as one nation”.

The Shankaracharya also advised the churches in India against using Hindu religious words, phrases and symbols like Veda, Agama, Rishi, Ashrama and Om , as an “inculturation” tactic to deceive vulnerable sections of people targeted for religious conversion. He also urged the Indian Government to look into the reported efforts by some churches to script a new bible for new converts by usurping sections of sacred Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas and incorporating them into the Bible.

Politics not diplomacy?
Shameless Politics of the UPA – ready to even sell the country – to stay in power

The UPA government has broken with a long-standing policy of disallowing intrusive fact-finding visits from America and permitted a religious vigilante state body from the US to sit in judgement on the extent of India’s religious freedom.

Government officials, who objected to an USCIRF visit at this time and were overruled, suspect that politics, not diplomacy, is behind the unprecedented permission to allow the Commission into India .

Its members are certain to target Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on the continuing fallout from Godhra and its aftermath as well as the BJP and other saffron organisations for communal violence in Orissa. It is significant that states that are considered unfriendly to Washington figure prominently among those routinely vilified by the Commission.

In March last year, the UPA government similarly allowed into India, without any prior announcement, a Pakistani, Asma Jahangir, the special rapporteur of freedom of religion or belief of the UN Human Rights Council.

A 161-Year-Old Ganesh Temple Cries For Attention

The 161-year-old Dhundiraj Ganpati Mandir in the Wadi area is one of Gujarat ’s oldest Ganesh temples and perhaps the only one made completely out of wood. The carvings on its wooden pillars are a must-see, as is the fountain in front of the Lord’s murti.

However, the temple is struggling to survive and is crying for attention. “This temple is like a monument and we are trying our best to preserve it. Not many know about its architectural importance. It’s a heritage structure and the government should protect it,” said Dr Ashutosh Mairal, whose family-run trust is maintaining the temple.

The two-story temple was constructed during the rule of Sayajirao Gaekwad II by a diwan named Gopalrao Mairal, who incorporated Maharashtrian and Gujarati influences in its design. Made from teakwood, it illustrates the religious fervor and love for art that eminent people had during that time. It stands on 44 pillars, and spreads over 44,000 square feet.

Yoga is one of Hinduism's greatest gifts to world

Let's Take Yoga Back

I began my Hatha Yoga practice later in life - at the age of 27. I initially began yoga, as so many do, to tone my body. But as I progress through this journey - and yes, I have come to believe that yoga is a journey of the body and mind (I'm still working on the atman part) - yoga is no longer only about toning my body; it has become the most important tool to develop my powers of concentration and focus. Yoga possesses the unique ability to force me to focus on myself alone.

As I slowly continue to discover the true beauty of yoga, I find myself increasingly proud to be Hindu; to be able to claim the religion that has brought this amazing practice to the world as my own is truly empowering. Yet through my work with the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), a nonprofit advocacy organization, I have become keenly aware of an alarming trend that disassociates yoga from its Hindu origins. I regularly read Yoga Journal at my gym and am continuously amazed at how many times its editors blatantly avoid using the word "Hindu." As I perused the April 09 issue, I found the Upanishads described as "Tantric yoga texts." Exactly one year ago, HAF wrote to the editors of Yoga Journal about the clear disregard for Hinduism. Our letter was never published, and upon following up with them, HAF was informed that the journal does intentionally avoid using the word "Hindu" because it carries too much baggage, and ultimately, their goal is to sell magazines! I immediately requested my parents to discontinue their subscription.

These issues plagued me, but it wasn't until I began furthering my own yoga practice that I found this disassociation so stark. When I look around the yoga studios I frequent, I am almost always the only Indian Hindu in the room. If I lived in a small mid-Western town, this observation may not be so surprising. But I reside in Manhattan, one of the most diverse cities in the US, where Hindus abound and yet, I can't seem to find any in my yoga classes.

During the course of a project for HAF, I reached out to my personal yoga instructor, an Iyengar practitioner who is well networked in the Western yoga world and actively practices in Rishikesh yearly, if she could point me in the direction of a yoga instructor in the US who is Hindu. She could not. I then turned to one of my studio instructors and posed the same question. She had no idea either. Immediately, I scanned the names of instructors of five well-known and successful yoga studios in Manhattan...from approximately 90 instructors, I found only four Hindus, as well as a handful of instructors who had given themselves Hindu names such as "Ganesh Das". I was stunned. Where are all the Hindu American yogis?

So, perhaps it's time for the Hindu community to look inward and accept our share of the blame in losing the affiliation between Hinduism and yoga. How can we maintain and promote the Hindu origin of yoga if the majority of yoga studios don't have Hindu students, forget the idea of Hindu yoga teachers? Our Hindu forefathers understood the unique benefits of yoga and shared yoga with the Western world. The West understood, fell in love with yoga, morphed it into a physical and "spiritual" practice - thereby removing any religious association - and proclaimed their expertise. And while so many non-Hindu Americans delve into yoga with passion, the majority of Hindu Americans seem to have forgotten its importance in uniting their mind, body, and soul and relinquished their knowledge and ownership of this life changing practice. As yoga seems to move further and further away from is Hindu origins, I am fearful of the day when instructors will altogether stop naming the various asanas in Sanskrit or ending class with the traditional 'Namaste' - that is the day yoga as a Hindu practice will truly be lost.

In an effort to avoid such a catastrophe, I urge you, as a Hindu American, to reclaim yoga by once again becoming an expert in its practice. We cannot lay claim to a practice if we as a community don't follow it ourselves. As a proud Hindu, it is a humbling experience to learn a practice originating in Hinduism from so many non-Hindus. But it encourages me to push forth with my yoga practice and perhaps, teach it to others one day. I urge you to take a beginners' yoga class at a local studio and encourage your children, siblings, parents and friends to do the same. Many of our local Hindu temples offer free yoga classes taught by instructors who are born Hindu, and some of you already attend them...next week, bring a friend or family member with you. If you practice basic asanas at home, move your practice to the next level and take an intermediate yoga class at a studio. Swami Ramdev's yoga has surged in popularity with Hindus in America and around the world...continue to strengthen that practice and share that knowledge with others. I am not denying that many Hindu Americans are regular yoga practitioners - but that number is still a fraction of the strength of our two million strong Hindu American community. We can and should do more. Yoga is one of Hinduism's greatest gifts to world - something that can be practiced by anyone, without relinquishing the religion of one's birth, and is beneficial to everyone. As you practice yoga, you too will find an immense pride in being Hindu and once again, the world will credit the practice of yoga to its rightful mother - Hinduism.

Taj builders used Harappan measurement units

Designers of the 17th century Taj Mahal, the finest piece of Mughal architecture, employed the same unit of measurement used by the Harappan civilization of 2000 BC, according to a new study reported in the latest issue of Current Science.

The study by R. Balasubramaniam of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has for the first time shown that the unit of length called angulam — mentioned in Kautilya’s treatise Arthasastra dated 300 BC — was used without a break by Indian builders for over 3,900 years until the British imposed their units in the 18th century.

The ancient angulam has been found to be equal to 1.763 modern centimetres, according to Balasubramaniam, a professor of materials and metallurgical engineering. He has carried out dimensional analysis of some of India ’s historical structures, built during different times, to identify the measuring units used in their engineering plans. He says he was surprised that angulam and its multiples vitasti (12 angulams) and dhanus (108 angulams) have been used as the unit of measurement right from the Harappan times till the pre-modern era when the Taj was built.

Balasubramaniam, who last year studied the dimensions of the 1,600-year-old Delhi Iron Pillar at the Qutub Minar complex, found that angulam and its multiple dhanus were used as the basic units of length in its design. For example, the total height of the pillar is exactly 4 dhanus, adds Balasubramaniam. And now in a paper published in Current Science, Balasubramaniam has shown that the modular plan of the Taj Mahal complex is based on use of grids of sides measuring 60 and 90 vitasti.

He says the study has established that the design and architecture of the Taj is based on traditional Indian units codified in Arthasastra and that "there is nothing foreign" in its design.

"The fact that the unit of angulam of 1.763 cm could match very well the dimensions of historical monuments establishes the continuity of India’s engineering tradition through the ages for as long as 3,900 years," says Balasubramaniam in his paper. "With the new knowledge we can analyse all the important ancient structures in India ," he says, and hopes the findings "will open a new chapter in the study of metrology (science of measurements)". But how did the angulam tradition remain unbroken for so long? As quoted in the website of Nature India , Balasubramaniam believes the workers from the Harappan days were perhaps using some kind of scale "that was handed over through generations".

Sadhus perform 'Samudra Arati' on Puri sea beach

Note:  Hinduism has always been an environmentally sensitive philosophy. No religion, perhaps, lays as much emphasis on environmental ethics as Hinduism. The Mahabharata, Ramayana, Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Puranas and Smriti contain the earliest messages for preservation of environment and ecological balance. Nature, or Earth, has never been considered a hostile element to be conquered or dominated.

Hundreds of saints and sadhus from across the nation, alongwith the Gajapati king of Puri Dibyasingh Dev, on Friday evening participated in the Samudra Arati being performed by the Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, the Sankaracharya of Puri Goberdhan Peeth. On the occasion of one-year completion of the Arati, the Gobardhan Peeth authorities organised a grand function on the sea beach.

Last year, the residents, particularly those living close to the sea, were panicked as the sea was behaving strangely and eating out the land mass of the city. This apart, the fear Tsunami is also haunting the locals. The Sankaracharya, as per the provisions in the religious texts, had begun to worship the sea god Barun by offering arati daily to calm the sea. Since then, every evening the Arati of the sea god was performed and the sea was calmed down, the Adityavahini claimed.

Forgetting Hinduism When Preserving the Past

The World Monuments Foundation (WMF) is the leading private organization dedicated to saving the worlds most treasured places. Since 1965–in more than 90 countries–WMF experts have been racing against time, applying proven techniques to preserve important architectural and cultural heritage sites around the globe.

The 2010 watch list for India has five monuments is listed below.

(HPI note: No listed building was built by, or is significant to, the Hindu religion. Of the five, one is Christian, two are Bhuddist and one is Muslim).

PHAJODING - In 1224 Phajo Drugom Zhigpo established a center for meditation perched on a mountain side inBhutan . Consisting of 10 temples and a series of meditation houses, Phajoding has since been the regional center for a spiritual tradition that seeks the divine through solitary meditation.

DECHEN NAMGYAL GONPA - Dating to the 17th century, Dechen Namgyal, in Nyoma , India , was an early monastery or gonpa of the Dregpa Kagyu branch of Tibetan Buddhism along the ancient trade route of Ladakh. Perched 14,000 feet above sea level on the Western Tibet Plateau, Dechen Namgyal is still used today as a place of worship for 10 monks.

AGHJOST MONASTERY - The 13th century Aghjost Monastery complex rests serenely on a slope of a gorge near Garni Village in Armenia. Only a few walls and thick blocks of stone remain of a vestibule and churches for St. Peter and St. Paul . A peculiar stylistic element that is commonly found in Gothic and Romanesque churches in Europe, but rarely found in Armenia , is two full-length 14th century reliefs of apostles Peter and Paul.

OLD MOSQUE OF SHALI FORTRESS - The Old Mosque Of Shali Fortress, completed in 1203, is perched peacefully atop a small hill in Siwa Oasis, Egypt. The Old Mosque survives today as the oldest monument in Shali as well as the oldest mosque in the world constructed using Karshif, a unique earthen material produced naturally through the calcification of earth mixed with salt from the soil.

Did you Know

It is all about Pandavas

All traditions and beliefs in Bannikoppa Village in Haveri District of Karnataka revolve around the legends based on the five Pandava brothers in Mahabharata. Bannikoppa villagers believe that the Pandavas lived in their village for one year during their exile period. Majority of the male members in the village are named after the Pandavas. The village domesticates only cow and no other animal because Pandavas did not like domesticating any other animal.

When some villagers tried to rear goats or breed fowls, they all were killed by rare diseases. Only Lingayat Panchamasali community members live in the village as it is believed that other community members cannot live in the village. So other community members don’t stay overnight at the village.

A century-old temple in the village is named after the Pandavas and it is the only temple in Bannikoppa. Bannikoppa Village is about 6 km from Shiggaon in Haveri District of Karnataka. Elders of this 250-household village believe they shouldn't rear domesticated livestock like sheep or goats, neither poultry for traditional reasons. Legend has it that the Pandavas lived here for one year and since then no other animal than cows are bred here.

Dharmappa Pujar, priest of the only temple here, claims the belief is that the Pandavas were not particularly in favor of domesticating fowl. Carpenters, masons and professionals who do other odd jobs finish their work during the day and leave the village before night. True to their veneration of the Pandavas, the male members of the village adopt the names of the five brothers.
